: 14 Bolt FF Problems

I have a corprate 14 bolt with 3:73 gears in my truck. The tires are 285's and I have a stock 350 with 350 trans. I don't drive the truck much or haul much with it. The other day I took off quickly and chirped the rear tire. I wasn't trying to burnout or anything just took off kind of fast. When I pulled into my drive it felt like it had a bind to it, like it was a posi. I drove it to a gravel parking lot and turned in sharp circles and backed up that way and it still felt like it was binding. I drove it down the road again and it doesn't bind anymore. I have heard of rear ends having posi for a few days and then being toast. Could have I done that to a 14 bolt. Is there a good way to check without tearing the cover off. I jacked the rear up in the air and turned both side tires and the other side will rotate opposite. When I had someone try to hold the other steady you can't. I don't want to keep driving it if it is going to leave me sit sometime soon. Thanks for any information.

Just pull the cover and check it out, it will take you 20 minutes from start to finish.

Pop the cover and check it all out. If you don't wheel the rig find an open carrier on ebay or something. If you want some traction and don't want to spend much get a mini spool.

Well I pulled the cover off and didn't really find anything. I don't know a whole lot about rear ends but I don't see anything drastically wrong. I don't have a gov loc. I didn't see any metal pieces by the magnet and didn't find any missing parts. I jacked up the rear end again and both sides turned freely. I could spin the driveshaft and block the passenger tire and the other would spin. I can't figure out why it was locking and binding earlier and now it feels fine. Any ideas would be great.

Just FYI, the Govlok for the 14ff are not junk. There just not the ticket for wheeling, they unlock when they want and don't lock when you want them too. OK, so maybe they are, lol. For street use they are OK. They don't use all the tiny gears and springs and crap the other smaller axles use. I sounds like you do have a G/L in your truck. Mine has it, and does the same thing you described.

There is a reason its called a "gov-bomb"...

67chev, if you still have the cover off, post a pic so we can see what is inside.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but how can I ID my 14b carrier? Pulled it apart to weld up the spiders and go 5.13's and found clutch disks like a limited slip in mine. It has 3 spiders (thought they all had 4) so WTF! :mad3:

I paid 100 bucks for the c&c 1ton and now I got to pay 175 locally for a damn open carrier? Theres nothing on ebay right now by the way.

So to keep with the intention of this thread, how can I be sure I have a posi, gov-lock or some kind of limted slip POS?

gov-locs have 3 cross pins, opens have 4. that is how to tell the difference. and why the hell would you ever pay 175 for an open carrier? the whole axle isnt worth that much. try craigslist.
