What do I need to do in order to swap a T-176 from a FS Cherokee into my CJ7? I have the 258, D300, and it is replacing a T-5.

Thanks!

258 should have the same bolt pattern. new pilot bushing possibly and slap it in.

if the bellhousing has the correct bolt pattern just bolt it all together, and get the rear shaft lengthened and the front shortened. the shifter hole may be in the wrong spot, but i do not really remember. been a long long time since i finally said screw trying to hold the t-5s togehter i blew 2 or 3 up before i switched. but if i remember right it is just a bolt and go type thing.

I thouhgt the t176 in the fsj's were like the t18's in the fsj's. They both have that big spacer and longer input shaft to move the tranny and shifter further back into the cab of the fsj. I may be wrong. I have been ONCE before:flipoff2: Also I believe it is a t177 instead of a 176. meanig differant gear tooth counts on some of the gears. All thats not a big deal if I am correct on any of this. Just get the correct short input and remove the spacer and your good to go.

You are correct.

I remember doing a clutch job on an 81 J truck with a 360/t176 and it had the spacer to push the tranny back so that the shifter came out of the floor in the right place. without the spacer the shifter would have come out under the dash.

It will fit in a CJ, but the rear DS is going to be a little short.

For the V8's there is a spacer, but if you found one with and I6, there is no spacer. Haven't looked yet to see if the spacer is the same for the T-18.

biggin, can you remember the pattern on the outside of the gears for the differnent ratio's? I cannot find that info anymore.

What about input shaft length? This came out of a FSJ with a V8, and I have the I6. Where would I find the correct shaft, and is it worth doing?

um i don't think so, my t-177 is outa a FSJ, it was a J20 if i member right, with a 304 or maybe it was a 360, but it was a direct swap. of course i have a conversion bellhousing that has like 4 bolt patterns. i bolted the new tranny up along with new clutch, pilot bushing, and throw out bearing. bolted on the t-case and got new shafts, and was done. and all the t-170 series have identicle externals so it makes no difference, the only difference is 1st-3rd gear ratios, and 4th is the same in all of them. and if there was a spacer you can just swap out the front bearing retainer and input shaft from a standard t-170 series tranny, same model obviously cause i think that the t-176 has 20 teeth on the input shaft and the t-177 has 19 teeth. either way it is still a bolt on deal, you can use the spacer and just have a little shorter rear shaft or the way i just explained previously. and actually i bet even with the spacer the t-170 tranny is still shorter the the t-5. when i swapped there was about 8 inches shorter, or maybe more... but in anycase i do not think the tranny had a spaced, i think they just used a deeper bellhousing, cause like i said mine came outa a J20 and it was exactly the same as the t-176 i had to rebuild for my '83. and i bout the t-177 as a package with the bellhousing, flywheel, pressure plate, clutch, and a np208. if you can snap some pics of it and we can prolly tell you for sure.

edit... after some research it looks like the trannies were the same, input shaft etc. at least i can not find anything other then 1 type of input shaft, and all t-177s and t-178s were in FSJs, none were ever in a CJ, only t-176s were in CJs. So speaking from experience, it should be a quick simple swap. especially seeing that when i got my t-177 in i did nothing except seperate the tranny, tcase, and bellhousing...then cracked open the tranny and checked it over. after this i literally took it over and plopped it in (my bellhousing, clutch, throw-out bearing, and pilot bushing had been installed the previous night). then put everything back together, and ordered my new d-shafts. then it was all done.

Okay, so if I can find a T-176 out of another CJ or a FSJ with the I6, the shaft should be the correct length?

How do I compensate for the shorter transmission? I realize that the drivelines need to be changed (planned on that anyway). But what about relocating the crossmember or changing T-case linkages? Anything like that I should know?

if you are using you stock cj pan then no mods needed as you should have a set of holes for the t-176, which as explain previously is the same as the 177. the shifter holes inside the jeep may need to be relocated or just slightly clearanced, the hole for the t-case will need to be clearnaced as well. but there are no mods to the linkage on the t-case. dana 300's do not have linkage like a tj does, it is bolted to the t-case(shifter). then you get your new d-shafts and your done. easy.
any other questions?

Perfect ! Thanks for the info--maybe this won't be as bad as I thought...
