Who has one and wheels it? I just bought one and want to know if this is the right board to ask questions. Seems there are more 40 and 60 questions here.

I think there's a couple of guys on this board that "wheel" their 80s in the US. More folks from down under with 80 experience here as well.
Mine is a DD for the most part but occasionally I have to get it dirty so that the truck doesn't forget what it was built for and what it will be doing when the payments end:)
Besides, with this board, there is always someone who knows someone who know something about just about every Toyota.

I had one for 2 years and wheeled the shit out of it. Go to my Cruiser site below or check out two issues ago, I wrote an article in Toyota Trails about 80's in Moab.

I used Cristo at www.sleeoffroad.com for parts and information, but if you want to use this forum for questions there are a bunch of us here with 80 series experience.

I have one but don't wheel it. My friend Nick has one and he does wheel it. (http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/nicks_rubi_run/)

I'll mail this thread to him.

Wrench,
The 80 online is a great source for info, you just have to wade through all the "how do I change my oil?" questions.
Mostly a General info kind of board but there are a few hardcores among them.
Christo Slee and some of the folks in the mountain states seem to be leading the way to wheeling the 80's.
Nolen (wngrog on this list) had a 80 that he wheeled the daylights out of until "kate" reached obsession status.
We have a couple of guys in Lonestar that are locked and running 35's that aren't afraid of bodywork, including one running a bowtie motor.
All that said, you will probably find more answers to your questions on the 80 list since it is a model specific list.
As the 80's come down in price I expect to see more of them on the PBB over time.
Welcome to the world of the cushy cruiser.

I have a 97 40th Anniversary 80 and wheel it as much as time permits.

wheeling just a tad (http://www.myclimbinginfo.com/images/forumpost/wheeling/Paragon20020308/2mk_0108.jpg)

Nolen has helped me and Christo from www.sleeoffroad.com has always been a huge help.

The 80's list is great, but it generates a ton of useless email as well.

This site is always great.

I belong to a NYC club, Gotham City Land Cruisers (http://www.gclcny.com)

I've actually had the most luck by varying where I ask the questions. That way you always get a fresh view. Sometimes guys that drive a 40 may have an idea that 80 drivers don't know about or would think of. Sometimes an 80 driver is a better source because they know the specific truck a little better.

Either way, the 80 is very capable and there are a lot of them that are really starting to hit the trails hard.

I've wheeled mine pretty hard over the last year and it's never let me down. ... of course, when you sink it and open your door to find 1 foot of water running out....
hmmm, how did i get wet feet :-) (http://www.myclimbinginfo.com/images/forumpost/wheeling/Paragon20020308/2mk_0150.jpg)

The nice thing about the 80 is when I take off the 36" bias ply bead locked TSL's and put on the 34" BFG AT's, I can get my supercharged 80 cruising in the mid 80's pulling a 5k trailer full of dirt :-) .... you should see the faces of people as I blow by them, still caked in mud, towing a trailer ,snorkel like a woodie ... :-) .... how does the commercial go? .... priceless :-)

Mike, I'm always looking for more opinions on 80 series lifts, what did you go with? How do you like it, on/off road. Thanks.

Thanks. I'm sure I will have fun. Thanks for your info. Your truck is sweet! What are you running to fit 36's?
I just joined the Cruiser list.

I think the 80's rigs are way cool, but watch out for the guys that drive big cruisers something a little odd about them?

Wrench and Cruiser Ken,

Sorry for the delay - been out of town (hey, gotta work to pay for the toys once in a while :-( :-).

I had the standard OME lift in there, but recently upgraded to the OME J springs and longer OME shocks (all bought from Christo). I also have 2-10mm OME spacers all around. Lowered the bumpstops in the rear by 3" (would be better at 3-1/2" but will keep at 3") and installed front bump stops. There is a myth with the 80's that the front rubber cones inside the top of the springs serve as a bump stop. Well yes and no. They slow down the compression but don't limit it. I bought some bump stops from Energy Suspension and lowered them 2".

Now the 36's fit perfecto. Heck, they're as cool as a 22 year old college chick :-) I'm such a dirty old man LOL, at least not as fugly as the guys above :-)

I've written a pretty thorough writeup on the whole build up and will be posting it to www.yourlandcruiser.com over the weekend.

Not mine but it gets wheeled. Sits on 38 claws now. The suspension can be had at slee offroad, It's the original Outback setup owned by the craftsman that builds the stuff.
