A good single shock will generally allow a softer ride. Some rigs use duals because the shock tech when they were built sucked. You really don't need them unless you are running high speed. They help my ride, so I run duals and stiffer springs because I use the Burb to tow.

When I had a 10" IFS lift on my burban I ran triple's on each front side. Running singles sometimes got hairy at high speeds on the highways. That was mainly due to having torsion bars. When I did my SAS I run the 9-way adjustable ranchos and love them. Set to 1, the softest, for street and 7 when mobbin thru the dunes. The more shocks, the stiffer so it depends on your suspension setup, wether you have torsion bars, coild, leafs, or really arched leafs. If you want an adjustable shock go with the Ranchos or any other than the Pro-comp adjustables. Reason being, depending on what you're going to do with your rig, the adjuster is on the shaft end which means that the shaft is hollow to allow oil to pass thru the shaft. The adjuster restricts the amount of flow of oil to control the dampening and rebounding of the shock. Hollow shaft = weaker shaft. The Ranchos are on the body end which allows it to be stronger than the Pro-comp. Shocks do little on the trails for you if you're crawling slow. Now, if you're pre-running then you want to run a resevoir shock. Resevoirs are intended to help keep the oil cool so it doesn't thin out and loose it's shock absorbtion. This is why you see all the pre-runners with them because the shocks are moving fast and generate more heat. I think it's hilarious when crawlers use them because it is pointless and a waste of money IMO.

with modern shock technology, one is plenty. how much lift are you planning on running?

You might as well not even run shocks. I don't understand these people.

10-4 on the too much lift

it is gonna ride like crap with that much lift so putting an extra shock at each end isnt gonna make any difference. Hell put 5 on each corner, you arnt gonna notice any difference.

Yep. But if you are going with 5 per side, chrome them. It makes the ride softer and adds 23 hp.:flipoff2:

Run 1 shock on each wheel but put your $$$ in the adjustable 9000. But with the 12 in. lift you won't get any ride quality. Might as well be riding on a skateboard.......:smokin:

Recently encountered a super-mall crawler , ya' know 10 bolts and the biggest set of Thornebirds they make..:shaking: .. Well it had three RS9000's at each wheel and four....yes four... steering stabilizers. Upon closer examination I noticed that two of the three shocks at each corner had tiny holes drilled in them to remove any dampening properties. Also the bottom row of stabilizers had been "neutered" as well! All these shocks seemed to have been FUCKED when they where new as a nice side note!

For the people doing math in there head that's like what....$800... or so?

Yeah, one quality shock per wheel should be fine.

why in the hell would you want 12 inches of lift? if someone sneezes near but that trucks going to tip over?

And the ride will still be rough....

Since it was free, I would spend some cash and drop it down some to around a 6-8". Avoid the problems you will have in the future. If it's going to be a wheeler or you don't care about ride, just find some cheap lift springs and some adjustable shocks. If you're running a 1/2 ton drivetrain, you need to lower it down. It'll be cheaper and more practical in the long run. Let us help you.

Lower it. Sell the 12" springs and use the $$ to get a set of good 6" springs. The ride will be much better and unless you are running nothing but deep mud you will have a better wheeler.
