OK everyone, I am in desperate need of advice. My 77 FJ 40 is putting out some blue/white smoke after I shift and accelerate, and also when I am at high RPM's and let off the gas. What do you all think??? Valves, rings or something else. Time for a new head?
By the way, the cruiser runs great but is using more oil than normal the past few weeks. No leaks though.

Please help me out....The Newbie:confused:

Thanks Ron

I WOULD SAY ITS THE VALVE GUIDES.....OR PISTON RINGS.....TIME FOR A SBC......
BLACK AND SUTTY...MMMMMMMMMM.....MAYBE A CARB OR IGNITION PROB.....

i'd have to agree, sounds like i'd try the ignition first-especially if you have the old point ignition set up and remanufactured distributor. don't overlook the coil, spark plugs and wires as well. if it's still there, then you are burning oil because of bad valve seals, which it sounds like it's doing, because you are missing oil. check the spark plugs and see if they are black. if they are, then take that head in and get the valves done.

blue smoke when you back off usually indicates valves. Blue smoke under power usually indicates piston rings. So maybe time for a freshen up or engine transplant. Go diesel!!!!

Black soot, carb setting too rich or maybe ignition. I would look at the carb settings first.

I know exactly what the problem is. She is pissed off because you gave her 4 inches of lift matched to a lovely set of CANDY ASS 31" all season tires:eek:
