hey, i have a 84 f-150 stepside with 302, 4 speed manual, eddy carb, eddy manifold, and 35-15.50-15 TSL*sx's and it sux gas and i think its becuz i dont have the right gears for it. I changed the gear fluid and went to see wut type of gears are in it and we counted the teeth then divided by 12 (42/12) and ended up with 3.5 so im wondering which gears to get for good around town driving, a friend told me to get 3.73's, but im not sure, thats why im asking. thanx.

I ran 4.56 gears in my 96 F150 with 36 inch radial superswampers and it drove damn near like stock. I could use my overdrive again. Most importantly my get up and go came back.

well also i dont have an automatic, my 4 speed is geared perty LOW, i dont even use first gear(granny). Fourth gear is obviously a lil higher but i dont wanna get outragious gears and be revving high at 50mph. i just need better gears to match up good for the bigger tires.

I run 3:73's in my truck with the SAME tires and a 5 speed and it worked ok. i could burn em:eek: With the 4 speed I would go no deeper than a 4:10:smokin:

I had a 5 speed in my 96.

Whatever you do I would pretty much go by the common charts floating around out there to figure out what gear you need.

im thinkin about 3.73's, if i go lower, then i would prolly end up gettin bigger tires

Seriously, you will hardy notice a difference from 3.55 to 3.73.

IMO your minumum should be 4.11 which would be ok.

I had a 5 speed in my 96.

but your tires were bigger by a bit too. My 35's measured just shy of 34" with 15lbs of air on 15x10's.

i looked at it, i figured 4.11's with 35-38 inch tires would be good, run about 2300 rpms at 60-65, not bad,
