View Full Version : Where did I go wrong

Ok so for the past few weeks I've been going SOA on my YJ while swapping in an 8.8, and regearing to 4.88s. This project has been moderately overwhelming, especially while trying to keep the engineering grades high at the finest school in the land, Texas A&M.
I figured I should just try to get this project done in one whole swoop so I swapped in a SYE as well. Now that i have the front d-shaft connected, i drove it around a bit, but with no read d-shaft.
The problem is that I am stuck in 4wd. Is it safe to assume that once I put the rear driveshaft on everything will be ok? Or did I mess up somewhere when putting in the SYE? It feels like the t-case isn't even shifting in between 2hi,4lo, etc. Its just staying in 4 HI.
Suggestions?

have you tried manually shifting the transfer case from underneath the vehicle. If you removed t-case spacers after the SYE was finsihed your shifter linkage could be out of adjustment.

I feel like the shifter linkage is what it might be, but everything is so freakin tight in there that its hard to do any work at all. Its hard to explain, but the first flare when working down from the knob, has a little play in it. Not a huge deal but it could contribute to the problem.
VA tech is pretty cool i guess. THey're a pretty well proven engineering school as well.

You're not going to be able to shift the t-case any better/worse with a rear driveshaft in than you can without a driveshaft installed. Look towards the linkage first, as was suggested already.

There is a great Jeep club there at A&M. I bet they can look at it and tell you what is going on.

This may be a dumb question, but have you tried shifting out of 4wd with the engine off? I've noticed that every once in a while my T-case gets stuck and for some reason that's the only way to get it out of 4 hi. It'll shift between 4 lo and 4hi w/o any problems though.

Its probably just the shifter linkage, you'd think that I'd know how to put this crap back together by now. SInce I took it apart probably 5 times, remebering that i forgot to put something in right as I was RTV sealing 'er.
I'll probably just check the linkage, anybody got any good links to shifter linkage pics.

With some SYE's don't you have to trim the shift rails about a 1/4"? If it is not the linkage then I bet that is his problem.

This is the SYE off of PORC.com that sells for like 179 or something. So if that one needs to be trimmed then yes.
DO you trim the piece of metal that is the pilot for the shifter, or do you trim the actual shifter itself.
Thanks
