View Full Version : Running a regular D300 upside down?

Ok, it's an odd situation. I have been planning on running an NV3550 and D300 for some time now, but serious tranny problems have put this project at the top of the list (I can actually hear my tranny grenading itself!). Problem is, I have a YJ with the stock axles. I have a pass drop Dana 44, but it's not ready to go in and won't be for a long while. So my question, is it possible to run a regular D300 case upside down (dropped to the driver's side)?I won't be connecting the front driveshaft or doing any driving other than 2HI. I'm only comtemplating this because the exhaust will be in the way and I can't afford to rerun it on the other side. I can't just use the old case because I'm swapping from an AX-5.

If anyone has any cheap (cheap=free/near free) tips to get this thing back on the road, I would appreciate it.

its known as flipping and you need a kit to run it like that. Look around for flip kit.

what you need to do is drop the coin and get the downeast offroad flip kit.

I already know about the flip kit, I'm just trying to save some cash. This break down is coming at a really bad time and I'm going to be strapped for cash. I definately can't afford the $550 DEO wants.

I'm not worried about shifters or the front driveshaft. This is just a bandaid for a while. If I run the case upside down will there be any oil leakage from the shift rails or inspection cover, etc? Will there be an issue with oil starvation?

if your going to just run 2hi, whynot install it the correct way...than take your jeep to an exhaust shop and just have them cut and reweld the exhaust to run down the driver side, than just dump it off the skid. Be alot less money than the flip kit and a heck of alot easier....heck i'm sure you know someone around that has a welder you could use or do for you for some beer.

That was my original plan, but like I said, money's tight. I could probably find someone to do it for lunch and a case of beer, though. Would there be any problems running the exhaust so close to the brake lines, like brake fade?
