I have a 79 cj7 chassis with an 86 body. the guy I bought the cj from pieced the jeep with parts from both jeeps. I need to get another power steering gear. how can I tell if I need one for a 79 or an 86? I believe that on my 350 in the jeep the power steering pump is for a chevy. are there any differences in the hoses to connect up to either gear box? I was looking at an agr power steering gear but before I put the order in I just want to be sure..

Thanks,
Mike.

I don't believe there is a difference between the 79 and 86 boxes, or their crappy sheet metal mounts, so it shouldn't matter.

I've had problems with AGR stuff not staying together. Junked mine and went with Howe, been great since. Might wanna also look at PSC, as they're cheaper than Howe and I think a lot of folks have had pretty good luck with them.

I beg to differ. IIRC Jeep changed to steering gears starting in 1980 from a
"flare fitting" on the gear to an "O ring fitting" on the gear.

Take the hose off the steering gear and look at the fitting, it should be obvious which one it is.

I'm NOT 100% positive on that, but PSC does differeniate between the 72-79 and the 80-86 steering gears.
