throw out bearing question

This is a newb like question so I'll post it here.

vehicle:1989 jeep cherokee,4.0,ax15 5speed external slave conversion,

Can someone tell me if the throwout bearing is in contact with the clutch fingers while ideling in neutral?I'm trying to diagnose a noise.....

Yes they are always in contact.

so the t/o bearing rides againsts the clutch fingers even while in neutral?

I have a grinding/whining noise only while idleing in neutral...it goes away completely when I push the clutch in??I was inclined to think transmission input shaft bearing.....but have been told by a few peaple that it is probably the throw out bearing....:confused:

The throw out on my CJ is 1/16 off the fingers

I would venture to assume if it is only noticable in neutral it may be the input shaft bearing, as the throw-out is always in contact, but I duno.

Most likely, I just had the same probelm/noise and pushing the clutch in made it go away. Replaced T/O bearing along with a clutch and the noise is gone. BTW, the T/O bearing looked like toast.

The trans is a remanned unit from man-trans.com,the clutch is a new pro gold with all new componets....everything has less than 300 miles total so I'm at a loss.

Looks like I'll find out exactly what the culprit is when I get the motivation tear into the fawker!

before you go and rip into it you should check to make sure your starter is properly engaging the flywheel and that it is tight...when i did my 5.0 swap i had a terrible noise coming from what i thought would be the throwout bearing turns out the starter as cocked and was rubbing the flywheel...when i pushed the clutch in it went away..i guess as the flywheel flexed it stopped rubbing or some shit..anyway i checked it by letting the jeep idle in neutral then get under there and try to wiggle the started back and forth...but before anything chock the wheels or put the e-brake on so nothin bad happens..good luck
