98 tj with 44 r but that damn low pinion d30 fr. Iknow that the lp is going to be hitting the rocks or ground so is there any way to protect that or should i find a high pinion d 30. whenever i do break this d30 i will eventualy find a d44 fr, but not for a while. should i just build this axle and be careful or is there even a big difference between lp and hp d30. thank

HP is more desireable, but IMHO it depends on how hard you wheel. If your gona some day upgrade to a 44 (plus ya get locking hubs) then maybe some good armor for the Lp 30 would get ya by. i.e. crane, rockcursher, ect.
hope that helps.

I would just shave the lip off of your low pinion dana 30 and weld on some protection. I think if I was going to replace it with a high pinion dana 30 I would just go ahead and get a dana 44, but if you want a high pinion one out of a cherokee would be a good option assuming it's a non-disconnect. Just wheel it till it breaks...

oh... forgot to add... www.tkhfab.com has some good inexpensive HD diff. covers for the D30, too.
btw... as far as knowing the WJ conversion, its basically a knuckle swap, but just keep trolling and reading before making any major mods. Learn as much as ya can, and you'll save money in the long run. :D

ive always had full size chevys and been off roading for about 4 yrs but never had the money to buy a tj. well now i have one and paid to damn much for it but its a 98 with 50,00 miles on it and i might get a 4-6'' long arm RK lift or just a 4.5 RE SP with 33s or 35 ??? im thinking 456-488s lockrite or elocker in front and detroit in my d44 rear. im tring to go the cheapest rout but b e a daily driver and trail capable. i would love 35 s but its a lot of money to suit my tj for those . whats you op?? daily driver, and i know to get cromo axle shafts and warn hubs to beef up the 30 but does that mean i will have manual hubs on the wheel to turn?? i dont want to get board with 33 but if i can make 33 capapble of wheelin with 35 then i save money and a lot of parts!thanks man

The “C” on the outer end of the axle is the same one that is used for the WJ D30. This means you can use WJ knuckles on a YJ or TJ front axle or a XJ HPD30 (non disconnect shown here) to get the benefit of high steer and separate drag and tie rod links. Another advantage is larger rotors and 2 piston calipers. Some modification required ;)…

Dana 30's are actually pretty strong axles for what they are. I've seen guys wheel 37's on them and have no problems. Buy some chromo shafts for them, a decent diff cover, and maybe a truss and be done with it. 33's are not going to hurt a dana 30...

It all depends on how you drive, and how good you are at keeping your driveshaft of the rocks. I never broke anything because mine was a lp, but i have a buddy who was tearing up d-shafts everytime he went out so he switched to a hp 30 and solved that problem. I say wheel what you got and see how it does, you should be fine, there are obviously more people out there wheeling with they're lp 30 than a swapped in hp 30.....

I started looking into the HP when I wanted to upgrade my brakes, 35” tires with 456’s, auto and 4 to 1 didn’t help the brakes too much. I figured why not get another axle housing to build while still using the Jeep? So, found one in the back of the shops parts truck and went from there. Kinda the same story with the rear axle… ;)

If your pocket book can handle it, I would get the Elocker over the lockrite any day... but thats just me. I wish I had gone that route over the no-slip I have. Not that its not a good locker, it is, but it turns the dline all the time and can be hard to steer in some cases.
