No clue what kind of V8 it is (didn't care!)
NP435
Divorced 205
Skyjacker 8" (?) spring lift front & rear
Skyjacker lift steering arm
44 front/60 rear
Q78 Swampers on 15" 8 lug rims
3" body lift
The buddy I got it from says something is wrong with the engine - no clue what though. It also needs a gas tank since the one in the bed is rusted inside.
This things is HUGE though! Barely fit on my trailer :p
Very nice. I wish I could find deals like that. So do you feel like you screwed you friend yet?:D
By the way we have the same trailer. So I know it would fit on mine:D
The Adam Blaster 04-11-2002, 07:43 AM Aw man, the last place i thought i was safe from you has been invaded......
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Nice ride though Dave.
I'm thinking it's got an old school 360 in there.
Lots of aftermarket goodies that will give you some nice power.

That friend is one of those guys who likes to blow money. He buys stuff, I just wait for him to get tired of it or need some quick $$$ and I buy things dirt cheap from him :p

I will check on the engine this weekend and see what it is, as well as getting more pics...
To be honest - at this point it will probably be parted out and used to fund my Toy project, but I am not decided on that, and I can tell you that tossing the bed, hacking the front fenders, lowering it, bobbing the frame, rear 4 link and 1/4 eliptical suspension, install my Dodge 60 front, 4.88's, front ARB, 42's on beadlocks, and a doubler down the road are a tempting to say the least ;)
Pavemen 04-11-2002, 08:38 AM DRM -
If you part it out, I have a friend in CA/OR that might be interested in the Skyjacker springs and pitman if they can be easily made to work on his RC.
Lloyd 04-11-2002, 09:47 AM Congratulations, and welcome! This section of the board has been too quiet. Looks good; IMO it'll make a better family wheeling rig than most other things. Sounds like you've got a good plan for developing it along these lines. If you do decide to part it out, let us know - at least in NM it's hard to find Dodge parts from those years. Whatever decide to do with it, MOPAR TO YA!
Thanks guys for the encouragement :)
I really am torn over this one.
And in reality my major concern is 2 things:
1. I am completely unfamiliar with Mopar stuff..
2. Lack of EFI on the motor.
I already have all the parts gathered for my Toy/tube ceation: 4.3L Chevy TBI V6, TH350, Toyota dual cases and adapter to TH350, Dodge 60 front, Some other 60 rear, 42's... etc....
Man - the problem with deals like this are the options they open up for me :(
NECKSTER 04-11-2002, 10:52 AM David, you obviously have been planning your toy a whole lot longer than this thing. Just part it out to fund your toy. Why let yourself get sidetracked from your main goal. It is a great find, but it just isn't you.
With that said, too bad you don't live closer. I could use that truck. LOL
Lloyd 04-11-2002, 12:00 PM Dodge stuff really isn't that much different from anything else, at least in trucks from these years. Granted, it does have its share of quirks; but so does everything else. Plenty of help available here.
Since the size and condition of that engine are both unknown, EFI suggestions are problematic. Personally, I think it's nice, but unnecessary and I get along fine with a good carb (Quadrajet or Motorcraft 2100/2150). Unfortunately Dodge used Carter carbs almost exclusively (Quadrajets on a few 360 truck engines around '79) and for offroad Carters suck - they are the ones that give carbs in general a bad name (offroad). Edelbrock Performers are a re-badged Carter AFB - same story. If it has a Carter or an Edelbrock Performer, get rid of it immediately and try either a Quadrajet or Motorcraft 2bbl. Then test it out, and see how much of an issue EFI is for you. On my '77 I removed the Carter BBD/manifold and replaced it with an iron Mopar intake from a junkyard, and a Quadrajet. Mileage went from 10 to 15, power up noticeably (15 hp gain according to Desktop Dyno - with everything else stock) and outstanding performance at angles and other offroad situations. Granted, you might expect 17 mpg from an EFI engine in the same vehicle; it won't need a choke cable, and it'll run until the pickup pipe in the fuel tank is no longer submerged - or the oil pickup in the pan. But a good carb will run just fine after the oil pump starts to suck air also; so unless you're planning a dry-sump we can dispense with that part of the argument. Now Pete will come on here and say that "carbs are for lawnmowers" and EFI is superior - and he's absolutely right that EFI really IS better. But not by a great deal, and to me it's failed the cost/benefit analysis so far. My current Qjet was $50; people often get them for much less. My previous rig (a CJ-5 with a 258) got the Carter YF replaced with a Motorcraft 2100 that cost me $10. Before that I had a Ford pickup with a 2100 on it. All of these have run fine (as far as air/fuel goes) at enough angle they were starving for oil.
There are ways to get EFI on that rig if you want to. If we assume it's either a 318 or 360 (LA series) then you can just drop in a complete Magnum engine out of a junkyard; EFI, roller cam, much better heads, etc. This will only require cutting a small notch in the bellhousing for the crank position sensor (and I've got measurements for this at home). You could keep your short-block and do a heads-up swap to get EFI, but don't be leaving a $400 roller cam and $400 set of lifters in the donor engine. If you can find a cheap but mostly complete Magnum engine that ate a piston or has some other acute problem in the bottom end, this would be an excellent way to go.
If it's a B or RB engine (probably swapped in; ignoring stroker combinations a B could be a 383 or 400, RB could be 413, 426, or 440) you can still swap the Magnum in, but will need a Magnum/LA pattern bellhousing. If it's a B or RB and you want to keep it - and who wouldn't - there are the aftermarket systems like Edelbrock and Holley. There is no OEM system for these, but with a little junkyard engineering you could also adapt a TBI system off something else to it.
FULLSIZE 04-11-2002, 10:57 PM ya, what he said.:D

Looks like it's already been done for me. :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Cool truck, if and if I'm not mistaken, somewhat rare in that year with a stepside.
As far as EFI options, the easiest would be a swapmeet Holley ProJection system. I know several guys running them that have had good success, most of them have the old analog 2 barrel system. However I also know guys who've thrown them away and returned to a carb, including my brother. We recently converted his '70 K5 to TBI, runs great now. AFAIK, the only difficult part of putting a TBI on a non-Chevy engine is the distributor (and may need a custom chip as well), however I know I've seen instructions on the net on how to convert just about any magnetic pickup distributor to work w/a GM computer (just a thought, since someone else mentioned TBI).
Pete
Lloyd 04-12-2002, 08:28 AM For the distributor in a TBI conversion, you could also use either a DUI, or convert your donor's HEI distributor for your engine (with the factory connection for TBI). All the DUI units are based on junkyard-engineered HEI conversions and pretty straightforward (did this on my old 258 with a Chevy 292 distributor and drive gear from a 401). All this stuff's on the 'net. Only issue on your truck might be a need to to massage the firewall a little with a BFH.
pcorssmit 04-12-2002, 11:41 AM Couldn't you just use a stock Mopar dist. and make it work with the Chevy stuff? Thats what I remeber reading about. Never tried it, though. My brother used to have problem on his K5 runnning a large cap HEI, but when he did the TBI he went with the small cap dist.
It seems that on a Dodge, the obvious solution to distributor to firewall clearance issues would be to put in a big block. :D

I'm pretty sure that you could, and it should work just fine. I've never done it either, but don't forsee any problems (yet). Just throwing out options - if one is going to pull a complete TBI system off something, getting the distributor too will probably add about 60 sec. to the operation.

Absolutely! :D
GRMhick 04-13-2002, 07:05 PM Damn nice man.. I REALLY like that truck. Too bad it isnt out here, because i would buy it and daily drive it.. I have never seen an ex cab short bed 3/4 ton... very cool. I take it that is a 74... and let me also guess that that is a chevy dana 44.. oh and as for the springs, I am intrested in them too for m power wagon, along with alot of other parts in it.. but as for the truck I say you get it running, and wheel it while you are building the toy.... ot ya know, use it as a tow rig for the toy and come out here and run the con.. then let me take the truck home :flipoff2:
Damn nice man. Welcome to the club.
Garrett
And Mr. Flip-Flop strikes again :p
I put the Dodge up for sale here locally - looking for a quick profit on my money. If it does not sell this week, it gets parted out... I will keep you guys informed if I start pirating parts since I saw some interest in some of it....
GRMhick 04-20-2002, 11:18 PM hope it sells for you.. hope it doesent for me... that grille looks pretty straight... if it is straight.. let me know, because i want it if it is...
Ten_Bucks 04-30-2002, 12:00 PM I'm putting this back to the top for you, DRM. BTW, nice Dodge. If that rig was mine, I'd ditch the bed and figure out how to swap in a 12 Valve Cummins in that bad boy.
Almost 2 years later, but I am now a Dodge owner again - and this one is sticking around ;)

Not for trail - this one for towing :)

Not for trail - this one for towing :) And now you got us wondering what the other one looked like. You think we can remember that far back?
