ok..iv done rear axles before and a front axle once a long time ago..but on the D60HP axle when i have the crush sleave in it wont crush and it wont pull the bearing race down either.. i try to pull it all together with out the crush sleave and it will pull together fine so i know nothing is misaligned..anyone give me some input on how to do this..i tryed to just sit there with the inpact gun but it pulled the threads off the nut..i used lubed too also to help the bearing race..i also put a block of wood behind the pinion and pound the yoke down still nothing...please help

I do not use an impact gun. I use a breaker bar with an extension. You really need to give it some beef to crush it.

Crush sleeve? I didn't have a crush sleeve on my HP60, regular pinion preload shims...

Edit: if in fact it uses a crush sleeve, as mentioned above, you have to use a breaker bar and go very slow while checking pinion preload frequently, or you will overcrush it.

Some were crush sleeve.

Be sure the yoke splines are clean and square. I have had them that are worn and dirty "cock" ( I thought pirate could handle that term) sideways slightly and not slide on no matter how hard you turn the nut. You should be able to get it to bottom on the crush sleave with a regular 1/2" ratchet. then turn to the 10 foot cheater fo the crush and go SLOW you only get one shot.

I've never heard of or seen a D60 with a crush collar. I'm almost positive that even if it is some oddball that originally ran a crush collar, you can use shims and ditch the whole crush collar assembly. Without a doubt that's what I'd do. get yourself some preload shims for a few bucks and do it that way.

If you're hell bent on using the crush collar, I've always crushed them with a big 3/4" impact gun behind a good solid compressor with big air line. It can be a real pain in the ass. A huge pipe on a breaker bar could also work if you can find a way to somehow stabilize the pinion.

Just make sure you go slowly, because once that thing gets drag on it, a tiny turn on the pinion nut makes a huge difference in preload, and once you overtorque the collar, it's pretty much impossible to reduce the preload without starting all over again with a new collar.

I've never heard of a HP 60 with a crush sleeve, but who knows. When I do large crush sleeves I also use a 3/4" impact gun. If for some reason you do go a little to far, then remove the yoke and add a super thin shim and start over, it WILL crush just a little farther.

The late model axles did use crush sleeves. By chance are you changing gear ratios? Most aftermarket gear sets are designed to use preload shims. Compare the height of the landing below the outer pinion bearing surface on the pinion shafts.

yea i got it done..i didnt use the crush sleeve there was no possible way it would work with giving me enough threads for the nut and washer to go on..so i just tighten down the nut with the shims behind the bearing race and tq down the bolt till i got my breakaway tq right
