I have a 70' 40 and would like to update the steering column. I am considering the mini-truck power steering set-up and could use a smaller wheel with tilt, getting to be a squeeze to get in there as is. Anyone have any suggestions? What has been used and how easy/difficult is the swap? What is a good price for a column?
thanks

I got mine from a junkyard for $100. It works great. Tilt steering, signal lights and horn. It's from an old chevy truck with a splined end. Use flaming river steering shaft connected to a saginaw power steering.
I had problem hooking up the signal lights since GM and Toyota are different. Anyway, I was able to fix it after a long struggle.
Good luck.
Thanks for the info. With the 70's car or truck columns from a gm, is there an issue with distance from the firewall to the final wheel position?
Chrome on the cruiser? I think I'll keep that on the Fat Boy and off the trail.

I just installed a column out of an 87 Monte Carlo with no problems I modified the original mount then I used a 2 1/2" muffler clamp to secure the end of the column to the firewall brace and used regular spicer U-joints and a 3/4 shaft. If I were to do it again I might use the flaiming river U-joints just because of there size. I had rewired the cruiser and used the Painless kit for a GM column so I just plugged it in even used the wiper switch on the blinker by wiring in a couple of relays and the wipers stop at the top after I turn them off (couple of days of head scratching there) The only thing to look out for, according to painless, is a column that has a blinker system that uses the brake circuit like the cruiser dose not one out of a car that has a seperate yellow blinker light.
Just to make thing clear you don't need to rewire the cruiser to make it work just cut everything after the plug and splice into the cuisers wiring and it will also work just fine, my buddy did his that way.
