: What 4.56 aftermarket R&P are better for stock Samurao axle?
GBRAVO 04-11-2002, 02:55 PM I heard that Richmond R&P are not strong enough and you could break them easily. Are they really bad? What about US gears or Yukon gears?
I uderstand they are two kind of Richmond's 4.56 which is stronger?
I will use mt 33".
Rudezuk 04-11-2002, 03:22 PM Keep your stock gears and get a lower tcase!!! Get a 6:1 case and that will be enough reduction in high to make up the difference...then just put lockers on those 3.73's! You will be much better off that way!
fatkid 04-11-2002, 03:27 PM Don't even bother with changing your stock gears, Just change the stock axles before you have any money into them...:)
Lziffle73 04-11-2002, 03:40 PM Well, it looks like you already have a 4:16 gear set according to your website. I would go with Yukon Gears. I had a set of 5.38's and blew them up. I don't think it was Yukon's fault. I think the installer didn't do a very good job and the person that welded my rear carrier might have gotten it too hot and warped it. Since then I do the gear swaps myself and I do my own carrier welding. But even thought the ring gear blew, they replaced my gears no problems so the customer service is what I am basing my suggestion on.

Rockrat 04-11-2002, 04:32 PM YUKON 4:57 :flipoff2:
Sarcastro 04-11-2002, 11:53 PM I thought that richmond had changed their design and that they had gone to a corser tooth pitch or some shuch shiznit.. how did the 5.38s go on the street? noisy? what was yer top speed?:D
zukiman 04-12-2002, 01:12 AM I have the Yukon 4.57's along with the 6.1 transfer case from AAPA, and that gearing combination ROCKS. With my 34-inch-tall 33's and early 5th gear ratio, I cruise down the freeway around 4500rpm with power to spare. I can actually pass other vehicles without having to downshift! And the crawl ratio on the trail is sweeeeeeet.
I hammer my drivetrain pretty hard on the trail and I haven't managed to break the Yukons yet. I've broken several U-joints and 2 rear driveshafts since installing the Yukons, but the Yukons have held up great. Even now that I have Sumo driveshafts that won't break front and rear, the Yukons haven't become the weak link. They're also silent on the road. So overall, I definitely recommend them.
High5 04-12-2002, 01:40 AM if you want to change ratios in your stock axles then do it the junk yard way and find two front sidekick/tracker r&p's. from what i have seen the aftermarket gears suck. they break. people running the kick/tracker r&p's seem to hold pretty well. the auto's used 4.62's and the manuals used 5.12's.
i say this but i agree with the others. keep the stock r&p and get a sumo case. then save your pennies for a set of waggy dana44's or even toy axles. just my op.:D
Rocky Road 04-12-2002, 08:37 AM We've had really great luck with the USGears.
http://www.rocky-road.com/zukdrive.html
Main thing to remember with new gears is proper break-in. This is where most folks go wrong and end up breaking their gears. Proper break-in means driving your vehicle for about 500 miles in normal highway driving without shock-loading the gears at any point during that time. After that time, the gears have been properly heat hardened and are good and strong.
Most folks pop the gears in then do the worst thing possible..... they drive to some 4x4 place right away to play with their gears. Than jump on some obstacle right when the gears are at their weakest.
With proper setup and break-in, your gears will last a good long time!
Feel free to email us direct if you have any questions on gearing, gear setup, break-in, or the 4.57 USGears.
GBRAVO 04-12-2002, 09:19 AM There is not feasible to find Suzuki gears under an affordable price price here and Sidekick models arrived only with 5.13.
So, it is chesper to buy aftermarket R&P on the states.
For your guidance, I am locked F&R and using a 4.16 t-case.

How do you suggest breaking in gears on a vehicle that is built for trail use only? My zuk sees less than 50miles on the road a year.

Wes.
i'm with you. who the heck drives a trail rig 500 miles on the road before they hit the trail???? get the kick-track gears. they'll already be broken in for you. just my op.
Sarcastro 04-12-2002, 11:19 PM hey rocky?!!
how do you break in the front diffy?:flipoff2:
Rocky Road 04-13-2002, 02:15 PM They still need to be broken in properly before hard usage, or you do stand a decent chance of breaking them.
Do what 'circle track' racers do..... Find a parking lot and drive around for several hours in a circle if nothing else. It certainly sucks to do, but not as much as breaking a gearset in the middle of a trail, then having to replace them, then properly break in a set so it doesn't happen again.

Easy,
If you want your front broke in...... break the back in with 500 miles. Pull the front and swap side gears, put the front in the rear... then you guess it! Drive for another 500.
Think before speeky:flipoff2:
Sarcastro 04-13-2002, 09:43 PM Glenn, now my interest is piqued.. how do you break in? do you used the 4rest method?:flipoff2: or do you just drive around on dirt roads? or what?
I am going to get a set of new Yukons and I want to know what youall think...
4rest.. go fly over some water or somethin!!:flipoff2:
graydiger 04-13-2002, 09:59 PM Too funny! if you must break them in why not put your sammi on jacks stands, put it in gear and let it run for a week or so!
Bill4rest 04-13-2002, 10:00 PM Hey I'm just tring to help here!
4rest.. go fly over some water or somethin!!:flipoff2:
Plus I can't, I'm on Shore duty.:flipoff2:
Sarcastro 04-13-2002, 11:43 PM Jackstands!! like in Ferris buellers day off.. LMAO!!!
Hey 4Rest.... do you orion folks do alot of land duty? I see a orion fly overhead probably once a twice a month and I am 4 hours from the ocean.. you navy guys sure do get lost easy.. err something...
:D
Rockrat 04-14-2002, 07:28 AM Proped mine up on jackstands against a wall safety 1st then started the truck and let it run in gear 4wd for a few hours that was after driving under normal conditions the day before for 20 min and then letting it sit overnight :flipoff2:

will this really work. seems like to me it would need resistance to work properly.
Rockrat 04-14-2002, 08:43 AM It's gota be be better than doing nothing at all weight of the tires and every now and then give it a shot to speed up and down
your basicaly heating up the gears and meshing them at the same time the spider gears are already broken in and they are your link to hte axle not the ring. If you go and get a set of sidekick fronts yu going tell me that somebody engaged them every couple 100 miles to break them in I DOUBT it so what is the savings in getting used over brand new unless your getting them for a smokin deal and around here those chunks are big bucks

Nope, But it is for ASW(antisubmarine warfare):D
It's called M.A.D (Magnetic anomaly detector)or "The MAD boom".
When we fly over a Submarine the boom picks it up.
The Submarnine disturbs the earth's natural Magnetic lines of flux. By detecting the diturbance we find the sub:nuke: :skull: :D
Anymore info and of coarse I'd have to :skull: ya!
Sarcastro 04-15-2002, 09:58 PM so yer a flying metal detector, cut me in if you find any gold bullion! :flipoff2:

so heres the million dollar question, I think that I may do Yjs up front, can the bumper be made to work with the AAP shackle reveral, or adapted by myself..

I have YJ's but in a different design than the CSC kit. I'm sure you can adapt it, But I would make it differently so you would'nt have too.:D
GBRAVO 04-18-2002, 01:43 PM Thanks guys, I just bought a set of Yukon 4.57s.

are you going to do the install yourself?
let us know how it goes after the install, and what your opinions are about them please.:)
Rockrat 04-18-2002, 02:46 PM Here is how to do it yourself it's a write up I did when I did mine
I like them alot, although if they would have had a warranty on the 5:38 I would have gone with those instead R/P instsatll (http://4play4wheelers.com/tech_ring_and_pinion_replacement_on_a.htm) :D
GBRAVO 04-19-2002, 03:01 PM Yes, I will install them by myself. It is a matter of time more than experience.
I will advice you.
