For that past couple weeks I`ve been having a problem. The previous owner of my `87 XJ Wagoneer (Cherokee) replaced the fusible link coming off of the battery with an inline 30-amp ATC fuse,I never could figure out why until that fuse blew out of nowhere one day.It was fine for a while, then it blew a few times in a row on the trail and I lost all power every time. Now after a new alternator that had to be replaced,it blows that fuse everytime I shut the Jeep off. This is really upsetting.Has anyone else had any similar problems,or give me advice on what to do?Also, I cannot find out anywhere what gauge wire that link is supposed to be,or what size fusible link is supposed to be there.

Fuzable links are very thick guage. You can get them at any auto parts store. It is possible that 1) you have a short somewhere in your system. 2) you are spiking voltage and that is blowing the fuze. 3) the fuze and wire are too small for the application and that is why they are blowing.

I would take a multimeter and test across the fuze to see if there is 1) a short to ground on the circuit, if no short then 2) voltage when the Jeep is off. If there is no voltage, then, I would start looking at 3) spikes.

Ok,lemme rephrase this so I don`t sound like a newbie.

I already know how to do everything that you have mentioned, and have tried checking everything I can think of several times.Asking other people is my last resort.

What I really need to know that I cannot find out anywhere is what gauge wire needs to be where the previous owner spliced in a wire that I am assuming is not the right gauge. It is the power wire that goes from the POS terminal on the battery to the relay mounted about 5"-6" from the battery.

sounds like what i am having to deal with right now, the fusible links on my jeep i believe are 8 or 10 guage, then i got 3 18 guage, and a 20 guage, now the one that comes from the positive terminal doesnt even have a fuse in it, if that helps any good luck
