i got a used minispool for my 9" off of a forum and just installed it and took it on it's first trailride saturday, it worked fine. then sunday i think i stripped the splines out of it but i haven't torn it apart to check yet. i'm running 36's right now. my question is should i replace it with another minispool or am i just wasting my time? btw i was doing a burnout in 2wd when i fawked the spool up so maybe that has something to do with it(stupid, i know, i realized that as soon as i heard the really loud noise). if i don't do stupid abusive things do you guys think a minispool will hold up to 36's or should i just go to a full spool and be done with it

31 spline or 28? i got a 31 spline here with the hardend pin, pin was never used and the mini-spool has maybe 700 miles on it, i broke shafts before i tore the splines on this one, i also paid $65 for it and the pin new, ill sell ya the pin and spool for $45 + shipping. i upgraded to a 14b so i dont need it anymore and id like to see it get put to some real use

You probably broke the cross pin. I highly doubt that you would have been able to take the splines out of it like that. With that said, don't move the truck anymore. Those broken pieces will move through the rear end and can destroy everything. I'd suggest tear it down and install a chromoly cross pin.

i never snapped my stock pin, bent it tho, noticed that when i tore down the 9" to fix the shaft. but i also got the chromoly cross pin ill sell for $10 + shipping

thanks for the info, the noise it made sounded like stripped splines(high pitched really loud ratcheting noise) but i never f'd a spool up before so who knows. that be nice if it were the cross pin, that would be quite a big easier than replacin the whole minispool. oh and it is the 31 spline. NetBSD i'll get it torn down tomorrow and let ya know if i need the cross pin. and by the way thanks for all the answers to my posts guys, it seems like you two are the only really active people on the ford board

I would guess you broke a shaft before you break the minispool.I have a mini with 35s and a 466/435 and i spin the rearend all the time on pavement and its never broke. Also if the rear came from a truck factory it will be a 31 spline.SO are the full sise bronkos. The cars and mini bronkos had the 28 spline.IIRC.
Will.

all these different answers are makin me really anxious to get it torn down tomorrow. and i wasn't spinning the tires on nice smooth pavement, it was in some muddy rocky shit so i'm thinkin maybe it caught on somethin and that was the end of whatever broke

there is a reason why most catalogs list mini-spools as 'dirt track only'.
get a full spool and quit messing around.
** edit **
quit messing around and get a Dana 70 and weld it :flipoff2:

my 28 spline mini had many broken axles in it and it never failed but the splines don't look to good any more. my 31 spline worked of 3 years the after cutting my worn buckshots 2 ride out I broke the pin. I fixed it and about 2 more trips I broke another pin. I am running moser 31 spline axles so the weak link is the mini so I upgraded to a full spool and good so far. Now with my 60-9 frt diff I am really beating on it hard and its still holding but I figure I will end up braking a axle

this truck is trail only which you could probably guess from these pics:flipoff2:
anywho, i'd build a 9" til i was blue in the face before i'd run a dana or a 14b, ground clearance bitches!!! i talked to my brother tonight and he reminded me that after it broke only one wheel spun so it probably wasn't the pin, it had to have been either the splines or the axle(correct me if i'm forgetting somethin it's happened before:smokin:
OT any of you guys know if 5.14 gears came from the factory in any HP dana44s?

i broke 3 axles then finally sheared the moly crosspin on my 28 spline mini spool & in the process cracked the carrier. the splines were like new though.
upgraded to a 600+hp 31 spline full spool. weak link eliminated.:cool2:

yeah, im just gonna try to get some better gearing and get it back on the trails for now, then once my zuk/landcruiser truggy is done, i'll probably go a little nuts on the ford. i kinda creamed my pants readin the build thread on bronco75s 60-9. for now a minispool will probably have to do since a full spool costs what about 5 times as much?

yea my next step is a ff 9" I just like the 9" and am tired of trashing wheel brgs. I am going to use either 60 or 14 bolt outers with shafts splined to 31 spline and hubs machined to fit my 5 bolt wheels just like the hubs on my 60-9 frt

how bout an 8 with a heavy foot? i managed to finally snap a stock shaft after having it installed for 9 month and 700 miles of pedal to the floor. also how about a 8 with a 460 pushing that 9" mini for 2 years, seems to me only few have problems if the rear isnt built right

Whatever dude, I guesss I haven't been building them "good enough" for the past 25yrs. Cause none have ever lasted ME more than a month no matter how "easy" Iam.:flipoff2:

Had a mini spool in my 9" for 2 years running 40" boggers and never had a problem with it. Broke several axels though. More than likely your splines stripped on the axels not in the spool.

You got balls saying shit like that on this forum...:shaking: the rear ain't built right, so your saying that if anyone is running a mini and it brakes in 3 pieces like almost everyone on this forum has had happen until they figured out mini's suck, especially with a little tire and horsepower, but wait YOU had a 460 pushing a 9" mini for 2 years, in my opinion your a pussy ass driver..:flipoff2:
