You will have to grind the pinion bearing support though.
Once you set it up its easy to tell where it hits.

flip a coin, you may or may not. it is really not that hard to grind a little material away

As for the gears, they shouldn't be any trouble. Grind a little if needed, but I don't think you'll have to, if so it'll be miniscule. I just re-geared my 9" (along with a 100% rebuild and spool), and it was a super simple task.

i am running 5.83 gears in a stock case. no grinding, with either the stock carrier & now a full spool.:D

once i start working some this summer i should be able to get the loan i need to buy everything and start doin.

my plan is 5.13's and 38's
welded rear and some kind of full carrier locker in the front (depends on how much i have left after getting gears) and running on propane. i have everything except for the gears and front locker and tires

either buy a full spool or a used detroit from ebay. welding a nine is a PITA.

Yeah, since the 9" has a closed carrier you have to take the spiders out, weld them on the table, (hope the pin lines back up), and re-install...more than likely it wont line up and you'll have to ream the spiders to get the pin to go through.

If you want to stay cheap, get a $30 mini spool and a chromoly cross pin. Much stronger than welded, yet fairly inexpensive as well.

For the front, you are planning on running 38's on a D44, locked? If so you should budget in some 4340 chromo shafts and CTM u-joints right off the bat, otherwise you'll be pulling you hair out changing broken shafts all the time. 34-35" tires are about the biggest I'd feel safe running with a locker and stock shafts, but even then 760X joints are a must.

i guess a mini spool would be the best way to go. i'm in the process of getting a chromo cross pin

i'm also leaning more and more toward chromo shafts from what i hear from people. i think i'm going to try it out with stockers first and see how it goes. if i'm light on the pedal i should be ok.....but i'm never light on the pedal

Sounds good, just put some 760X u-joints in your stock shafts with full-circle clips and they should last a while with a light foot.

BTW, not sure if you got the messages on listserve, but the party is not at the same camp site as last year. Its the other way from pandapas pond, up towards the shooting range.
