I've got a 78 F250 and I'm trying to get the headlight switch knob off. I can get the wiper one off just fine, but I can't seem to figure out how to pull the light one off. In my Haynes book it says something about pulling the whole shaft out, but I don't know if thats what I have to do or not. Anybody know?:bounce2:

i useually just pull really hard, its a real tight fit, but i was told there is a little tab you push on with a small flathead to get it off

There's a hidden button on the top or side of the switch. You have to push this button down. That will be difficult if you have big hands to reach under the dash and do that. Once you get this button properly pushed the whole knob and shaft will come out easily.

So the button is on the backside of the dash? I felt back there and I felt a box, there was also a little gear like thing that turns when I turn the knob. I also found a little button that is just used when you turn the knob to turn on the interior lights. I felt around and I wasn't able to find anything that would release the whole shaft.

It's on the back side of the switch and most of the time on top. It's a 1/8 or maybe 1/4" pin sticking up in a flat area near the front of the switch. Go to a parts store and tell them you want to buy one and look at it and then tell them you changed your mind.

I think I found the button you were talking about. Is it a little white plastic button? I can feel the rod move when I push the button, but no matter how I push or pull it I sill can't get the rod to pull out. Maybe i'm not pushing it hard enough?

Generally you can't see the button, so not sure on the color. You do have to push it in very firmly, then the shaft will slide out extremely easily.

The knob also has to be in the right position for the butten to disengage the shaft. I forget which position off the top of my head, but I've gotten hung up on that before. I know it mentions it in the manuals if you happen to have one handy.

Here's a pic. It's not the white knob at the end, but rather the metal button in the middle. You must press it ver firmly then push-pull the rod a few time and it will come right out.

Sweet, thats it. I was looking for a pic of the switch that showed the butten earlier but couldn't find one.

Awesome, that pic is exactly what I needed. The one that I am supposed to push is the one that I wasn't pushing. I was pushing the little white one up front. Thanks a lot! I'm just curious why they had to make it so difficult just for something like that?
