I saw one of these at pick and pull a while ago, it did not insterst me for a swap, but more of WTF is it?
It was under a 70's chevy 3/4 or 1 ton, it has missive d60 like hubs, but was still a D44 with 297's

Just a normal External hubbed 44.
They suck, compared to the internal small hub ones.
All the torque is transferred through the bolts (hopefully studs).

My 8 lug stuff has external lockouts. Are you guys suggesting that I should hold out for a pair of internal style hub?

Actually there are two versions of the early trucks D44's the one with the external hubs like early jeeps/scouts. The second was an internal hub that used a huge spicer hub. When everyone first started using 35 spline outers on D60's they used these larger hubs and machined the inner spline to fit. I'm not sure if they used 30 spline outers or not. Chevy and some Fords used these in the early 70's. Someone should know about the stub axle size on the big hubs.

Exactly. Chevy used to run these HUGE internal-style hubs on the d44's. They're strong as all-get-out but if you do manage to break one, good luck trying to find replacements. I've only ever seen one d44 with them. They are fricking huge. At least as big as d60 hubs.
