: wheeling with no shocks, how harmful?

Here's the situation, I just bought my rig a few months ago. It is already lifted. I want to rebuild the suspension setup, add hy-steer, 30 slpine LF & lower the body lift 2". It has no shocks on it now I am going to flex it & measure for new shocks. I have a trail ride planned for next weekend. If my shocks don't get here in time to install, how bad is it to wheel my truck without shocks?
rig specs: '85 4runner, 7" trailmaster susp lift, 4" body lift, 39.5 boggers, V-8 swap.

11" of lift, twice as many cylindars as stock, and tires a foot taller than designed for..
Jesus Christ, please don't drive that on the street without shocks. And good ones at that.

Slow wheelin and rock crawling, you prolly won't notice. but watch it when you start picking up speed and prerunnig to the next trail, or the next thread you post will be "destroyed the body on my runner, tubing it out now"..

Really depends on the truck. I wheeled my rig a couple of time with no shocks and it worked. But it was bouncy. At a ride this past weekend, on of the guys tore a shock in half, we just pulled it and he rode the rest of the weekend.

What kind of terrain? I say go for it, but be ready to shut it down and ride bitch if it dosent work.

Edit: Shit! Missed the 11 inches of lift! Keep that beast off the roads until you get shocks on there, and they better be good ones. Keep you speeds low on the trails, and I think you will be ok. But just barely ok.

trail rig only for now, no street driving. Got a tow rig. I just don't want to buy shocks for the way it's currently setup & then change it and have wasted money on shocks I can't use then.
Trip is to Tellico BTW

I fully expect to break a birf at Tellico, then I can order my longfields, but I don't want to roll it just yet. Sliders should be here tomorrow, then a full inside cage next month, then tie that into an exo this summer.

shocks are gonna be a cheap investment for the trip, even if you can only use them for a few runs... Tellico is always slick, and bouncy, you'll want shocks or just stay home...

It does have one shock on the front.
Shock length on the front from eye to eye sitting measures out 25" allowing for 6" of upward travel(no bumpstops yet).

I don't know where I could get a set cheap just to use for a month or two tops, and I don't think I am going to not wheel it at all until I finish my setup. The rear doesn't even have an upper shock mount at all at this point.

If your going to Tellico with that thing, spend the little extra and get some shocks on it for now. Skyjacker has a $30 off when you buy 4 for this month, check 4wheelparts.com.

checked them out. Good info from all thanks. I will try to get some mounted up before the run, I just have to order by length. If they don't get mounted, I don't plan on running the extreme trails at this point anyway, & just keep it nice & slow (in the back) I know better than to hold up the flow on the trail.

And X-over should be on your list pretty quick too :)

it is. Probably use Trail Gear or All Pro hy-steer. I am even considering swapping tires to 35x14.50x16 boggers.

And have to change your name?

Find a x reference for shock length and grab some cheapies from the local Auto store for now.

yeah, a cross reference catalog will save you some coin on shocks...

I would save the 39.5s just for mud runs & future use when the truck is finished, they are a litte bit of overkill now. I can always have more than one pair of shoes right?:D
I like the auto store cheapies idea the best so far, thanks.

Just tell everyone you have the automatic-lane-changer option.

nay saying bitches :flipoff2: I had a fullsize with 16" of lift and 44 boggers and ran it several months on the street, freeway, etc. It was not nearly as bad as I thought.

P.S I just seen the going to tellico part. You need to have shocks at that place. Hell if you were not across the country I have a set you could use for free.

with 16" of lift is there any spring movement to need shocks? :flipoff2:

I prefer to think of it as a truck possessed.

i would say get a set, i busted off a rear shock and my suspension flexed too far, bending a bracket, so no biggie there, but it could have been worse i'm sure. my shocks are my limiting factor so at least in my case they're important.

i drove my yoter for a long time with no shocks, but it only had a 4 inch lift and 33's and it was scary enough like that, every time i would hit a bump while going around a corner on the freeway it would get all sidways and stuff, and it almost put me into the wall a couple of times, plus urs will be worse cuz ur huge ass lift

39.5boggers- where are you in SC?? I'm finishing up my build hopefully VERY soon; however, Ive got to graduate first. I'll be throwing everything together after 3 years of piecing it all together once i get back in SC. Anways, always good to have someone to go with. (funny, one of the main things I dont have yet are shocks-i'll be calling TG soon.) BTW, Im in Columbia and wheel in Camden mostly-hopefully a hand full of trips to tellico and that new plance in laurens. There is a new off-road store off I-20called West Wateree Offroad and they had some tires there that were used a while back in good condition.

I know somebody running 39.5's on stock axles, with open front. he wants to take it wheelin, but he has a 4.3. He IS going to break...and bad. I am bringing the tow rig and trailer, just for him. we will see who owes who money after that lol.

I'm just down the road from you in Sumter. After Tellico I plan on putting in Longfields & beefing up the front some more. Crossover Hy-steer & we can go. Thanks for the info on W.W. Offroad, I've been looking for a fullsize spare. I heard about Gulches opening in Laurens, we'll have to take a trip up there.

thanks Noodles, I hope to have some on tomorrow. If I do break at Tellico, I'll have a good reason to buy the longfields then. I am trailering the pile up & back.

Been running a little over a year now with no rear shocks, Hammer's and one Rubicon trip. Works fine for crawling, it's the hauling ass out to the trail head that can get interesting   :D Someday I'll get around to putting them in.

thanks for all the help everybody. I found some shocks at West Wateree Offroad that they had just taken off a lifted truck so they could install a new suspension, $40.:D

Had to fab up some different mounts, but I will have shocks for Tellico now.
