I've never installed a 5-point, and have never looked at how you do it... To be quite honest...

Can a 5 point be used as a restraint system in a Daily Driver?
Where do you attach the system behind the seat?

I'm considering putting a set in my 87 4runner as well as 86 CJ...

As far as I know 5point harnesses are not DOT approved, so the cops may hassle you for wearing them. I seen a few people that had them but also retained their factory retractable seatbelts, and just wore those when on the road.

The shoulder harness attach to a shoulder bar behind the seat, or if you get the floor mount they go to the floor behind the seat. The mounting for the shoulder harness should be around 2 inches below shoulder height. The floor mount ones still require a bar behind the seat to go over so that the straps still come from approx 2" below shoulder height. You can go lower than 2", but the lower you go the more risk you take of experiencing spinal compression in a front end collision.

for instalation instructions, refer to the belt manufacturers. they are the ones that are risking getting sued by telling you bad information. they have the _right_ instructions

as for it being legal in a DD. it really depends on your state. i just finished discussing this with the head BMV office in indiana and it's legal here for a home made vehicle registration which is what my buggy is going under.

but it's not legal in a factory vehicle like the ricers are doing in hondas. *edit* btw, the ticket for it is a no-seatbelt ticket. nothing that big anyways.

Well.. OK... Lets take into consideration my 86CJ then...
The tub is very rusty.
The Drivers sealtbelt is inoperable in that it does not retract.. SO.. when wearing it, It is tightened across my lap, and then the excess that is not retracted is sucked uner my ass and I sit on it.

Yearh. I knwo.. not very safe..

But I personally do not beleive that I could replace the seatbelt because I dont think the Tub where it attaches could handle havign the mechanism replaced. Which is why I want to go with 5 points.
It would seem to me that 5 points attached to properly welded bars would be SAFER than the existing inoperabel belt or replacement thereof...

safer has nothing to do with the laws on the books. that may have been the original intention but it isn't the implementation.

I'll second that it's up to the cop...they may pull you over since the straps are not as obvious as the riser on an OE 3-point belt, but after that it's up to them (and the state) whether or not they give you a ticket. Most cops that I've spoken to about it understand that an SFI spec 5-point is much safer than the OE stuff and let it go, but only if you're wearing it ;)

do you have a shoulder belt on the CJ? if not, i think you'd be just fine with the 5 pt and only have to wear the lap to be legal, but use 'em all anyway.

From the cops that I have talked to about this (I race my Sti once in a blue moon), they usually only enfore this kind of stuff when they are busting down on street racers. Its like when they give them illegal modification tickets, just so they can bust them with something. I have a 5 point in my Sti and I'm going to get one in my TJ, if I get pulled over about I'm gonna just be polite. Dont expect too much trouble, esp. in a rig.
