Ok, here's my situation: I've got a chunk of $$ sitting here waiting to be spent on a t-case gearing solution. The problem is: One solution (Sumo's)would allow me to have the rig on the trails this summer, the other (divorced toy or ringer) would take me out of the wheeling scene until next summer. I'm leaning towards the toy t-case option because I've got toy axles sitting in my shop that will go in next winter. The other problem is: I'm getting married this summer, so I don't have time to take on the toy t-cases and toy axles project until after that...

So, what would you do??

I have an idea, tell your fiance that you are takin her wheelin on your honey moon, and as expression of your love, you are willing to wrench unselfishly on your rig non-stop until it is ready, and of course honey, money is no object.

Seriously, I would go the long-term route and do the Toyota's. I have watched scwafish going through withdraws for lack of wheeling over the past year buidling his rig up just how he wanted it, but he is about finished and it is awesome. I think he would say it was well worth it. But then again, he has a third little fishie on the way now, so maybe he shoulda went wheeling a little more..... :D

Go with the sumo case now....You can use it later with the toy axels....Just get a high angle CV dline.....You will be happy!

hell yeah i say ride now,the sumo case will do what you want.I have toy axle and a grs1 and I love it.I wish I would have gone the extra mile and gone with the sumo but man what a price difference. Here in florida 4.16 is all I really need to use the truck on trails and mud and turn 35's very easy in low range

I hear what you're saying, Tusker, I like to do things once, and do it the way I want from the start. But, the Sumo option is looking better and better by the moment. Hmmm...

Also, is weight a concern with the dual toy case setup? I'd like to keep this thing as light as possible.

when you go dual toy cases....you get a super short driveline in the rear. i would go for the sumos, you cant go wrong, besides you will get about the same reduction with a double toy case......welll in the neighborhood and everyone that runs the 6:1 sumo gears absolutely loves them!!! it is wheeling season right now, not wrenching season!!!

The toy option does sound like nothing but beef, but go with the SUMO's!!! You don't really wanna be outta wheeling for over a year do ya?

Go with the Sumo t-case.
Less driveline headaches.
And you can play all summer.

To really make the Toy cases worthwhile, you'd need to get a low-range gearset in one case. Two stock cases are a 5.2:1 ratio. So SUMO's are lower...

Unless you spend even MORE money for a low-range gear set...

2.28 X 4.0 = 9.12
2.28 X 4.7 = 10.7

... And with the SUMO's you get a reduced high-range as well - correct? So that SAVES you money on ring & pinion's.

4.7x4.7=22.09:flipoff2: There ya go!

Not using a toy tranny...overal length is only slightly longer (less than 2 inches longer) than stock.

I disagree, with a doubler and 5.29s I'm at 110+:1. Good for wheeling and will still do 70 mph. You can get the crawl using a Sumo, but thats about as far as you can go. If I wan to upgrade later 250+:1 is an easy and relatively cheap upgrade, and it will still have the same gears for the street.

You get to ditch the POS sami trans. and everything lines up perfect for a toy axle swap.

I have watched scwafish going through withdraws for lack of wheeling over the past year buidling his rig up just how he wanted it, but he is about finished and it is awesome.

Man do I miss having a runner...but its almost over and now I think its been worth the wait. The lwb is coming out sweet, no regrets. It has however been A LOT OF FRIGINN' WORK AND TIME. If you had to pay to have it installed it would be a zillion dollars. I have a busy job and a family. If I was still a single slacker (like Bobaki), it could have gone a lot quicker.

Maybe wheel it like it is for the summer, and go big over the winter. The sumo does offer instant gratification.

So, exactly how painful would it be to wheel with 33s, and stock t-case, and the stock 3.73s??

I wheeled my 4runner for a summer with 4:10s and 33s, and it wasn't too bad...

I wheeled mine the first time after the spoa and 33" one weekend on a brand new clutch 3:73,and a stock case, needless to say I put another clutch in it after getting back the following week. 1 week later 4:16.
A lifetime warranty or 70,000 on an auto zone clutch I dont mind R/R the clutch but after a wk thats getting old put it away and think big picture do it once and do it well dont waist time reinventing the wheel plan your budget right and watch for deals, a little time and waiting will pay off. :D

Great thing is, I don't have to cancel the wedding to do the Sumo!!:D

I figure I could always sell the Sumo if I change my mind. I've got a message in to Dave to put me on "The List" !! :D
