The nipple for the breather on my 205 is so narrow that I can't even get a wire from a coat hanger to fit through it...is this normal?

Doesnt need to be big. If you want it bigger, put some vice grips on it and rip it out. Get a 1/8" pipe tap, put lots of grease on tap, and tap it out. Put in a barbed fitting, run yourself a hose to safety from water etc.
