Excuse this simple question that I am sure has been asked here before, but I am new to this forum.
My project truck is getting back on track, and I have decided to install a 14 bolt rear.
I need some help as to identifying these axles, as I have been a Ford person in the past.
How do I identify the stronger years, and the "best" of these axles.
Again, apologies, but I don't have the time for several days to search the site and read all the replies.
Any help appreciated, as I will be at the U-Pull-It in a couple of days attempting to find an axle.
Thanks,
Mike

http://www.alaskaoffroad.com/axle_tech.htm is still a work in progress but it might help some.
I've never heard of any "bad" years. Pull the diff cover and find the gear ratio. If it is a 4.56 think twice about buying it, as far as I know, you cant get any lower gears for that carrier. The 5.13 gears are a Thick gear that only goes on the 4.11 and numerically lower carrier. I also wouldnt buy one that has an LSD. Detroits are only available for the open carrier. You can weld either but the open carrier has a stronger cross. :usa:

Try this http://coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml
The 3/4 ton 14b's will bolt up to a 1/2 Chevy without any mods except the e-brake cables. The 1 ton 14b's have to have the spring perches relocated and the shock mounts relocated, but the e-brake cable will hook-up without any mods.

mj,
My project truck is a '79 F-150, but it wouldn't be complete would it, without at least one Chevy part on board.
Nothing to grand yet. Replaced the 351 Mod. with a strong 460.
I have a NP205 in the truck and a NP203 on the shelf and have been talking to Wagoner Machine and will soon order my doubler.
Plan on a 14 bolt in the rear, and upgrading the D44 front for now. I am watching out at the same time for a Ford hp D60 for the front, but when I save a bit of money, just may have Boyce Equipment build a new one.
The truck will be street driven, but it hasn't been liscenced since June, 2000. Probably won't go bigger than 35's for now as my soon to be 16 year old son will be driving it also.
Have a good weekend.
that means you will most likely have to move spring perches and fab shock mounts anyway so you dont need to look for the more desireable (to 1/2 ton and blazer owners) 3/4 ton 14ff.
there are 2 variations of 1 ton version in regards to wheel mounts to wheel mount distance. the hubs differ but housing is same width.
