Hi, Im new here at these forums and I heard this is a great place for info on Jeeps so I decided to sign up :)

Ive got a question about tires/axles... Im planning on buying a 1990 Jeep YJ 4.0L 5-SPD this summer for my first vehicle. It will be for city driving mostly but I live very close to Moab and I LOVE MOAB so I will probably take a trip there once a week (lol). I was wondering what the best axle replacement for a Stock YJ would be? Im looking at the Currie Dana 44 rear but it seems a bit expensive. I will only have about 5000 to 6000 dollars to spend on upgrades when I get the Jeep and about 4000 is already used up by tires/wheels/lift/and other stuff. I need a good axle rear and front* (*if needed) to hold some 35" GoodYear MT/Rs. I want to buy the axle ready-to-bolt-on so I don't have to go buy a whole bunch of extra parts. If you know of any good cheap sites with good products please reply.

Thanks a bunch!

Also, are ARB lockers any good? I'd only be locking my rear but I want to know how ARBs are...

Thanks

These axles seem to be good, why don't you try them?

There's tons of info to be gained using the search function of this board. That being said,.....welcome aboard newbie:flipoff2:

As to your axles, dana 44's out of a scout or wagoneer would work, but these will not be bolt on. If you truly need a bolt on, you will spend TONS more money than if you do just a bit of fabbing yourself, or find somebody to do it for you.

An 8.8 out of a 95 or newer Explorer would be a good upgrade for your rear as it has disc brakes, and can even be found with gear ratios as low as 4.10. However, if you are planning to upgrade to a 44 up front, it would probably be easier to do a 44 in the back as the 8.8 is a 5x4.5 bolt pattern, which is what your jeep has now. This bolt pattern won't allow you to run the good hubs up front, so i'd stick with a 44 in the back, or you'll have to change the bolt pattern on the 8.8 (although that's easy enough to do).

ARB's are decent enough depending on who you talk to. Alot of people, myself included prefer a detroit as there are no switches, compressors, or airlines to screw up. The street manners of the detroit aren't bad at all either.

Good luck.
Get to know the search button.

Did you spend any time actually reading this bulletin board before you posted this? Ever spent any time in a burn unit? Good luck, dude. Godspeed... Oh, BTW, don't buy a '90 YJ, hold out for a '91 and you'll get fuel injection stock. You'll kick yourself later if you don't.

One more point, if you find an 8.8 with disc's out of an explorer, the Spring under perches will work just fine, assuming you keep your jeep spring under. The 8.8 is just about bolt in for a spring under yj.

Im planning on buying a 1990 Jeep YJ 4.0L

4.0 didn't come in until 1991. 1990 had the 4.2

I came from www.jeepforums.com or www.jeepyj.net

PS: What is better for Moab crawling and road combined? 33-5" GoodYear MT/Rs or BFGoodrich Mud-Terrains.

Doesnt matter where you came from. These guys don't take nicely to newbies.. Do a little research before you start asking questions, since you don't even know what motor a 90 yj has.

Really? Do they have everything else the 91-95s have too, or just the 4.0?

I'd sure like to see some proof of that. Because everything I've read, from auto parts stores, to Jeep itself, says that the '90 model Wranglers came with the 4.2L... The cherokees had the 4.0, but it wasn't the HO 4.0L

True, one of my good buddys works at Car Quest. And his computer always has the 4.2 for 90.

Good, cheap, and bolt on don't really apply to axles. At least from what I have found. I'm a newbie too though, so who knows. Why a 44? :nuke: When your done, you will wish you had a 60. Honestly, I don't think you will be able to find even a 44 for what you are looking to spend, especially from currie and with an arb.

Oh, and Dynatrac, Avalanche (already mentioned), and Boyce Equipment make good "bolt on" axles.
