: Rod Ends (female heims) and steering??
sfazr2 04-12-2002, 03:53 PM I was wondering if anyone had tried using the female typed heim joints with a solid, threaded (4140?) rod? If this is a good idea, where would I get some high strength ones.
To me, it just seems like the structure of the female heim joint (rod end) would/could be stronger than a standard heim joint.

ya fawkin idiot newbie :flipoff2:
sfazr2 04-12-2002, 04:32 PM I did search. Do you know how many posts there are with "rod ends". I would be here all night, and probably tomorrow night too.
Please show me the post that mentions this.:flipoff2:
road1will 04-12-2002, 04:47 PM earlier this week there was a huge thread about heims vs. TREs in a steering app.
go back a few pages. :flipoff2:
sfazr2 04-12-2002, 05:04 PM I guess you didn't read the thread closely. Using FEMALE type heim joints with a threaded rod vs. threaded heim joints and a tapped rod.
I already know about heims and TRE's.:flipoff2:

SMACK!
nice one newbie! People jump on the search band wagon and I don't think they know how to get off of it
I would just stick with tube and male heims, the rod wouldnt be as strong becuase it lacks the diemeter tube would have
sfazr2 04-12-2002, 07:21 PM yeah I guess. I've always had this curse of wanting to re-invent the wheel, a lighter, faster wheel. Maybe I should be an engineer, the ones I know can't seem to leave good enough alone.

WTF are you talking about, inventing the wheel?!?
this "wheel" was long ago invented and used.
not only have i seen many setups like this but i also have
one on my hydraulic rear steering - it's a 4340 steel tie
rod with a female heim.
oh yea, it's working fine and it's stronger - you do'nt have to drill into the tie rod and insert the male heim, which make it weaker.
sfazr2 04-13-2002, 01:59 PM Thanks for your input.
What Dia. are you using?

in my case i wanted to make the rear wheels very steady, so i went for an overkill - the cylinder inner dia. is 3", the tie rod is 1.75"(and so ofcourse is the female heim), and the heim's eye is about 7/8".
it can and should done with smaller components, depending on the vehicle and use.

sfazr2 04-13-2002, 06:58 PM 97 s-10 ext cab, Dana 30 front, 35's, I dont wheel as often as I'd like too(busy and live in the city).
Ok go ahead and flame me on the Dana 30, but I've accepted I'm not doing CALROC competitions, the truck is still too new to go full blown rock crawling, and is a little on the long side any how.
Question: What is the smallest/largest heim I would want to go with?
I'm afraid of a 3/4" being too big, (the hole not having enough material around it) and 5/8" too small(strength). Whats slick about the 5/8" is that speedwaymotors.com has a special bolt that has a TRE taper on one end and a fine thread bolt on the other end, but it's all one piece. Problem is it's only for 5/8" heims.
I realize this is entry level stuff for you guys but I'm sure you can find it in your hearts to share your infinte wisdom with the lower levels of the 4x4 society:D
KAcrawler 04-15-2002, 11:09 AM i use the 5/8" heims on my steering setup because they are STRONGER not weaker. The heims themselves are good to over 40,000 psi and if you are worried about the bolts just get some arp or other super hardened ones. I myself just use fine thread grade 8. you could also run 1" heims which are good to 70,000 psi and use a reducerto 3/4 or 5/8, by the way i got all this info off the avalanche web site which is also a place they are happy to sell you all this stuff
