: What T-case gears to buy if I'm going to start w/31"'s then move to 32's in a year
slider 04-12-2002, 04:27 PM I'm thinking I really don't want to start with the GIANT 32's...
What T-case gearing should I be at??...
Wasn't planning on changing ring and pinions...
Maybe a front locker?...for $179 at RR, why not?
I have to drive about 75 miles to get to the trails...
So, yea...I'll be on the road with it a lot.

WTF? If you know you want 32s get 32s!
:D

Get a 6.1 t-case right off the bat and leave the axles alone. Then get a set of 33" tires. that's what I would do if I had my time/money over again.

jims4x4 04-12-2002, 04:39 PM heck i havethe 4.16's and they do great with my way alarger 35" tsl's(even though i have 5.29's in the chunks) but with 31's or 32's heck i think they would do good
slider 04-12-2002, 04:50 PM Root..
I have a chance to get some used 31"'s from a guy I know...
BTW..What is the narrowest 31" or 32" I can get?
Too lazy to search!!!

that is because you don't run in the rocks. 4.16 + 5.29's is not enough for 35's if you run in the rocks. you'll burn your clutch up for sure. a buddy of mine runs 4.16 case, 5.38's in his d44's and 36 sx's. i ran his sami on jim and juanitas in clayton and i could not crawl! after that trip he sold his 4.16 case and is waiting on a sumo as we speak.
slider 04-12-2002, 07:15 PM will that 4.16 be OK for on / off road 50%/50% with 32"'s in the future for me?
The gears seem cheap, and I'm gonna do the work
Rudezuk 04-12-2002, 10:26 PM Go with the sumos....do it right the first time!!!!
jp008 04-12-2002, 11:14 PM For the money, Sumo is the way to go. The next step up from a 4.16 is a 4.89. The 4.89 is almost as much as a Sumo.
Get a Sumo, then update everything else.
evilfij 04-13-2002, 12:39 AM Hey slider, just a little newbie advice. :flipoff2: everyone assumes you are running on the rocks.
so that why you get ?????????? about things like narrow tires.
I know where I can get a set of waggy 44s cheap if you want to do things up rather than build the little axles.
You know and since the zuk is really light I bet a set of rover axles would work well too and hold up to 33-34 range
Since the price difference is so big and you are not crawling I think you could get by with 4.16s of course I have no fawking idea what I am talking about so take it with a grain of salt
Ron
PS you can geta 7.50 wide 32 or a 7.00 wide 31 if you want to make the zuk a little tractor Series rovers seem to do REALLY well with bias ply 7.50x16s in mud. You can run them down to almost no air pressure with tubes if you need to go on any rocks

Ok, like someone else pointed out - you REALLY need to tell us how you plan to use the truck. then we can give half decent advice.
Where are you located?
31x10.5 is common.
32x11.5 is common.
Stick with common sizes, easier to replace when you are away from home.
Actually, with that in mind, if you are sure 31s aren't going to be enough, go to the next more common size, 33x whatever.

TommyJ 04-16-2002, 01:46 PM If you're planning on building bigger later (and we all do), I would get the 5.8:1 from Calmini. Installation is a snap (with a bearing press) and the instructions are very, very clear. I ran the gears in Moab a few weeks, ago, on 33x14.50 Mickey Thompsons.... worked very well. If the 5.8:1 is too low, use second or third or even fourth gear in the tranny.
I drove the gears pretty good in Moab. Some good throttle and some 4-wheel hops on inclines (hard on the drivetrain for sure) and all held together. I was asked to "try to break them" and I did try. My axles held up, too. (Thanks, Brent at Trail Tough)
My two bits is "go low."
The high range will compensate for 32's perfectly with a stock r&p as well.
billjohn 04-16-2002, 02:02 PM I'm running (actually I broke the tcase gears again, but that's another story...) 32x11.5" TSL SX's with stock axle gears (3.73) and 4.16 t-case gears. I get through the rocks well enough, but lower gears would help. I CAN run 70 on the highway though.
Go to the gear tables on iZook and you can figure out exactly what you need. Just judge your highway rpms at 4500-4800 for a stock engine and go from there.
okcrawler 04-17-2002, 08:29 AM Consider what you want to do..... 4:1 and 31's make a real nice combination that is flexable and RELIABLE. Once you go 5:1 or 6:1 have a backup plan for how you ar going to get home! Sooner or later stock axles will give up under that much torque....
If you want to build a rock buggy, then start saving some $$$. There's really no cheap answers for rock rigs.. :rasta:
TommyJ 04-17-2002, 11:27 AM I agree with okcrawler.
He's dead nuts on.
