Unfortunately this is my daily driver and I was only driving on a dirt road when an unseen creek bank bank gave way. Ended up busting my transfer case linkage and had to spend a few hours piling boulders to get out. Instead of breaking the front axle on 35s the rear took a crap on me.I have been out of state for a week and my condo wont even let me change my oil here so I cant even investigate. I can drive around in 4x4 with some strange noises in the rear but dont wanna drive like this for fear of tearing in it up worse.

Any clues as to what I did. Rear driveshaft is turning fine and I dont believe its stripped ring and pinion as it doesnt even try to catch.Clunking constantly seems to be on both sides towards outer end of axles. If these old farts werent so anoying Id be out there working on it now. That and Im knew here so I have no where to work oon it it anyway. Any ideas or how much this is going to cost to repair. Any help is greatly appreciated. I know this is really vague but like I said they wont even let me pull the cover or a tire. Damn rules.

Thanks much

Go take your tools and work behind some shopping center or something. Your post is very vague but it sounds like maybe spider gears if your axle shafts havent fallen out.

X2 for spider gears. Let me guess: this is a Dana 35C in an XJ? If it is, go look for a new rear axle or start looking around the classifieds as guys throw those things away.

If you have any other kind of axle, right now is the time to upgrade to a full-case locker.

Already tried the late night dismantle but some old codger gets up at 3am to look at god knows what on his computer. And yeah I was thinking along those lines but I hopeing I just grenaded the cross pin instead of the spider gears. Spider gears probably tore up ring and pinion too but I dont here shit at the differential. Its more outer axleshaft area, so its a knew one for me. I have seen chipped spiders but not just stripped on both sides and this doesnt even try to to turn the rear end. Sucks paying 850 a month and not even being able to do shit. They honestly look at you weird if you pop your hood. Only good part is that no nody messes with my jeep.

 thanks for the help guys
