View Full Version : My Pile Of Parts

Figured I'd jump on the wagon and throw up my build. It's a '64 I've had for a few months now and it's going to be a compilation of parts from various projects and a few new parts as the cash flow allows. This is the day after I brought it home.

freds40
05-07-2006, 10:23 PM
It was built half way decent with a '76 front axle, a 327, sm 465, and this cool rear axle. It's an offset semi float 60 with 35 splie shafts, discs, and an eaton electric locker. Unfortunately I had hopes and aspirations of running a centered output t-case so it's on it's way out.

Got to hit a few snow runs before I tore into it. This one was my first time out with it and I got caught up with Weak-link. I was pretty disappointed in the performance of the carb (Edelbrock 600) and didn't feel like dealing with it so after this trip, I threw in my gotpropane setup left over from a Buggy build (no comments necessary Chris :flipoff2: )

One new part my wife concented to was a PRP bench for my 2 yr. old daughter. Unfortunately it didn't get installed right away so it was put to use by one of the other kids.

freds40

It had been a while since I was able to work on it so I invited it to my daughter's 2 yr. birthday party last weekend. :D

While I'm at it, here she is testing out her new crash helmet and bike (it's a Speacialized :cool2: ) I figure she might need the helmet this summer when I take her up the hill.

the rear detroit was completely grenaded, gearman even gave me props:D i have that third and an ARB at his shop right now i gotta pick up tomorrow. i had a welded rear in it and it SUCKED!

And finally as it sits tonight. DHONDAGOD came over last week and we got the front axle set in place. Got the front spring mount welded up. It came with the 38s so that's what it's getting for now. (might have to snake my old man's 42s one of these days  ) Front axle is prety pathetic. It was a partial trade for some other parts to my pops, converted it to single wheel, welded some 1/4" strap to the diff cover, sleeved the stock tie rod, Ground the calipers (because 15s are what I have), painted it purty and there it sits. It has no locker so I'm hoping the 30 spline outers will hold up until I can get the 35s.

freds40
05-07-2006, 10:40 PM
Front axle is 9" forward and the rear is still in stock location. Rear will go back about 7-9" as well. It is on jack stands but @ ride height, it will be 1-2" lower than it is here. :smokin: Chris and I came up with an idea to allow about 4-5" of up travel, decent down travel, and keeping the whole truck relatively low.

freds40
05-07-2006, 10:42 PM
Last one for now. Got these brackets from GRAVELMAKER. Great guy, great parts, and great prices. Hopefully get the front completely installed this week and start on the back end. A few minor touches and I'll hopefully be wheeling in 2-3 weeks. Back end is a 14 bolt w/ discs and it's welded up. Almost forgot, bolted a mini case behind the 465 w/ 4.7s. Again, it's what I had. Hopefully it will hold up for a while. I have a dana 300 (thanks again Georg) that will either replace the mini case or go in behind it. We'll see when the time comes.

So you going to come down and run DUSY and Swamp this year. I hear Chris was "exposed" to the glory of the booger pink thong and all. Hopefully I'll hit the Con once or twice this year.

Yeah the hangers are made for stock Cruiser springs. IIRC they are around $30 a pair. Dan makes some awesome parts. I got his 14 bolt disc brackets for this build as well. The springs are stock height 40 front springs too.

It should be done but I don't think I'm going to make it. I'd like to but convincing the wife that I really need to leave for a long weekend and spend $400+ on a trip is proving difficult.

Alright with a little daylight and since I have meetings in the office @ 8, here's a couple of close ups. The spring has probably 70-80% of the vehicles weight on it here. Like I said earlier, it will drop another inch or two when fully loaded.

freds40
05-08-2006, 07:55 AM
Heres the front hanger/spring mounts. I don't think I used the mounts the way Gravel maker intended but they worked great for my purpose. When both axles are hung, these will be getting a bunch of gusseting and reinforcement.

freds40

Been a while since I posted on this. Unfortunately my camera got left @ my sis' house in Petaluma so I gots no pics. Chris snapped a couple last week, maybe he'll post them. Any way. Front axle is mounted, slightly unconventionally (pic would help) and just got the rear tacked in last night. It's sitting @ 109" WB and for the tires that have found their way under, it should work fine. With any luck, some passer by will snap a few pics and post them, I'll see what I can do. :D

Yeah we were brainstorming for a bit on how to keep the axle fullwidth and keep it as low as possible. With the steering box in, up travel is limited to about 5" @ the frame which should still be plenty @ the tire. I'm happy with how they turned out. Chris spent a few hours "prettying" them up.

Bored tonight so I figured I'd update. My wife has been put on severe bed rest for the last 6 weeks so needless to say playing "mr. Amanda" (as she likes to put it) has left me little time to work on the Cruiser. Any free time I have found, I've actually used to wheel.  So far everything is working out pretty well. There are a few leaks I need to fix, DEFINATELY need a traction bar, and shocks would be nice as I've been cruising on the street around town WAY more than I figured I would. Any way, I got it out a couple of weekends back and got my poser flex shot. Durn fwheel well is in the way. :D

freds40

freds40
12-06-2006, 09:28 PM
So far I'm happy with the Wheel base. Even open, I've been able to get up some relatively steep stuff. Using the throttle helps a bit but this is where the use of a traction bar would help. This is the biggest tire I've run yet and I'm hooked. Big rubber definately = smaller rocks. :D

Well after a nice Christmas bonus, I was ablt to pick up some 5.38s for the 60 and 14 bolt and also an ARB for the 60. A buddy helped me get them installed last weekend. Tonight, we finally got a Traction bar in this thing. Still needs some gusseting but I think it will hold for the snow (if there is any) on Saturday.

REALLY wanted to take it for a spin around the hood but I just came in about 15 minutes ago and my hands are barely thawing out as it is.

I think the bar will work pretty well. The outer part is 2" .250 and the inner is 1.5" .250. Actually the inner is now .240 wall as I had to turn down .010 off the OD as it would not slide in before.

IMO, the lower is short enough not to need a gusset...

P.S. your axle is leaking.. :flipoff2:

Not much new to report. Although I am almost done mounting the front shocks. :D

Anyway, just wanted to show off my pride and joys.

Hazel is almost 3 and can't wait to "take my coozer to the mountains and drive around."
Helen was born on Wednesday and made Hazel a very proud big sis.

And mamma is plain fried but enjoying the fact that Helen is a really good sleeper. :D

Alright, little update. Cruiser is on blocks again although I finally got the blocks out from under the front.

Yup, I tore out the 60 and 14 bolt and Rocks are going in. I ended up having to lift the Cruiser 4" to clear the chunks but I'll get it back later on down the line.

Hell yeah...

That's alot of work with the 'ol flap disc, but it looks really nice, very desert-truck-ish...

How tall is it to the bottom of the frame right now?

Not positive on the belly height. IIRC it will be about 27". A bit taller than I wanted but with the full frame, I'm about as low as I dare go. The top of the front chunk is about 3-3.5" from the bottom of the crossmember below the rad.

Nah, these pics are from last night. I need to get the rear suspension dropped 4", then I can set the t-case crossmember, finish the steering, the brakes. I still have a bit to do and with the heat I only get out there for a couple of hours about every other day. :(

NOT VERY! I figure actually wheeling the 1 tons was about 6 mos.
I'm planning on adding a bit more wheelbase to the truck and didn't feel like making 3 point (or more) turns on every jog in the trail. This route is a bit cheaper than steering the 14 bolt.

aaahhh, rear steer, too.. niiice.

Little update with crappy cell phone pics. The frame is now stretched 16" from stock. The WB is sitting @ 119". With a skid as it sits, the belly will be 27" but I'm leaning towards flat belly with this wheel base. That would put me about 29". Right now the over all height @ the windshield frame is 84". It will come down.

Progress is very slow going. Life got busy. I'm fine with taking my time on it except when my 3 yr. old asks to go camping and wheeling and I have to tell her the Cruiser is still broken. :(

freds40

When I did the frame stretch, I also pinched the frame. It is pinched 8" @ the back. This shoule help with clearence for the rear steer.

Toploader was down getting some parts this morning so he gave me ahand throwing the tub on.

It's still sitting a bit high but the top will come down. I ended up flat belly @ 27" so I'm happy with the bottom.

Got a used set of Ouverson brakes so I just need to add a bit of hard line and I will have brakes once again. I'm moving in a few weeks so my goal is to drive the cruiser onto the trailer. Brakes would help. :D

Just moved back to Fresno. It's been out there for a few days while I get the new garage in decent order. It's coming home tomorrow afternoon. :D Still need to get the 220 wired up in the garage but should have that done in the next couple of weeks as long as things settle down a bit.

Yeah about like you and Paul, this one got parted out and I'm onto something new.
Wish I still had the 40, it was a blast. But the new one will be awesome for getting the family out camping. Should have the first trip hopefully this week.
