I just purchased a 01 Honda 400ex. When I go to start in (clutched in 1st gear) the thing jerks forward a bit. Could this be that the clutch is out of adjustment, going bad, or what? I have tried adjusting the clutch but that didn't help, but I didn't get to spend a lot of time on it. Anyone experienced this before?

It sounds to me like the clutch is dragging a little bit. You may be able to adjust it out, or depending on the condition of the clutch and cable you may have to leave it.

The clutch basket fingers have grooves worn in them. You will need to replace it soon. While your at it replace the the clutch discs also. Do yourself a favor and get a Hinton or some type of aftermarket basket, well worth the money.

Thanks for the info. I adjusted it a little more and it didn't seem as bad. I just went riding for a few hours and it isn't doing it now. I'll see what it does tomorrow night and pull out the clutch if I need to.

My YFZ has done it since I bought it when it's cold. If it only does it when its cold i wouldn't worry about it too much as long as there arent too many hours on it.

Start it in neutral when it's cold.

Start it in neutral when it's cold.
That is what I have been doing. I'll give it some time and see what happens.

both my cr and yfz do that too. Sometimes even after they warm up that first time putting it in gear it'll die. After that there ok. I wouldent worry about it at all.
