Working on my '97 TJ project which has become a serious pain in the a$$... Did the ax-15/231 to 727/Atlas swap- AA cps relocation kit-fuel cell with e2000 pump and Professional Products efi regulator-Kept the 4.0... Engine will not start-and really refuses to even turn over. Turn the key to the "on" position and the fuel pump initializes for about a second-as it quits, your turning the key to the "start" position and the engine turns over about half a revolution then it seems to "loose electrical power"... You can let the key come back to the "on" position and then immediately go back to "start" with the same outcome... The ASD relay may be the problem, although the relay is "known good", I still think this has something to do with it... I have no VSS right now-maybe a problem? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated-HELP!!!!

This may seem extremely basic and maybe insulting but...
Are you sure the battery is fully charged? FI systems need strong batteries in order to function properly. If it has been sitting a while I would check the battery.

after you check the battery is charged, check the ground wires that bolt to the motor and the frame. if you just did a tranny swap perhaps you left a wire disconnected. did you put back the ground wires and reconnect the starter motor if you had it removed.

The battery is deffinately fully charged... You can remove the "number 6 fuse" and the engine will crank freely... fuel pressure is adequate and constant-with no "pulse" from the computer with this fuse out... I really wish I had a FSM to figure things out-hopefully someone out here can be of assitance-Thanks for the help!

Did you set the correct gap between the CPS & harmonic balancer? IIRC it's supposed to be .050". You need to use either a brass or plastic feeler guage.

Good question.... I did set the gap to what I thought it should be-.050" like the AA book said-but you never know... I think im going to try the "slide the cps toward the balancer until you hear the ASD and Fuel Pump relays click" method... You think not having that adjusted right would make the ASD relay shut everything down? Thanks a bunch for your help-i'll try it and let you know...

We gapped my CPS with a business card and it runs fine.

Has anyone had an improperly adjusted cps that has led to some odd starting, or in this case, not starting sercumstances? We got super busy at the shop today, so personal conquests were out of the picture... I'm going to try to do some adjustment in the morning! Thanks guys-

I tried adjusting the cps with no luck... You can tap on it a bit with a business card between the sensor and the balancer-the fuel pump will initialize, but kick off part of a second later... should the pump stay on? This is pissin me off!!!

The pump will kick off if it is hooked to the computer, if it doesn't see a cps signal.

The pump is wired into the stock fuel pump harness and is controlled by the computer still... No matter where you adjust the CPS to, the pump still kicks on and then the ASD relay cuts everything off... You can move the CPS away from the balancer, then back, and the pump will kick on again, but only for a second... HELP!!!!

sounds like a similar problem i had on my 302, all that was needed to fix it was adding more ground straps, from the motor to frame, and as well as tranny to frame. if u wanna get crazy you can put straps in at each mounting point for motor and tranny, e.i. straps at motor mount locations and tranny/t-case mount
