2 different housings that I know of, big bearing. little, one is called a Torino...
Then ya have 28 or 31 spline.....

A basic rule of thumb is the newer the housing the better it is. Yes, there is a big bearing and a small bearing. this refers to the bearing pressed onto the axle shaft. the housing are, of course, different for each style. plus there is a mid/late 70's housing with a different pattern for the stampings that makes the center section taper out rather than but up sharply to the tubes.

Be sure not to mistake the 8" for a 9"......they are damn near identical, only smaller. The 8" was in a lot of 70's cars.

And even more '60's cars :D (Mustang/Falcon/Comet/Maverick/etc....)

I know someone who made that very mistake. Draged home an 8" from the wrecking yard only to have someone else give him the bad news. Doh!

I found my answer that I was looking for. A friend was going to give me a ford axle from a 68 torino, with a SB V8, we thought that it may have been a 9" but now after reading the thread, I'm glad that I didn't take it (yet).

How can one tell a late 60s to early 70s ford 8" or 9" apart?
And would it even be worth my time?

(free doesn't always mean a good deal).

If's all the tags are gone any easy way to tell is, if it's an 8" you can get a socket and ratchet on the bottom nut holding in the third member...on a 9" you have to use an end wrench to take off the nut because third member is in the way to get a socket in it.

My 74' early Bronco has the Torino style rear axle . It came with drum brakes and 28 spline axleshafts . It has the big bearing and
a small 10 inch brake . I have swapped to a 31 spline full spool
and big ol' Moser shafts w/ a TSM disc kit . I love my setup and wouldn't change a thing . If you have any ? 's contact either Moser engineering or TSM . Just my .02 worth :flipoff2:

Thanx for all your help here. Some very useful information.

I didn't mean to step on anyones toes here, but it's better than posting a thread and then getting flamed for it.

Yes all the tags are removed, and I took a quick look-over and didn't see any stamping marks. (didn't take my time to look)
