it all depends on how you build it. there is certainly alot of info out there for cherokee build ups. do yourself a favor, and read tons before you start modifying, it may save you$$$$$ in the long run

The Cherokee is a good cheap vehicle to start build up. Here are a few things that popped right into my head, there could be pages of shit....
E
Pros:

Easy to work on
The I6 will run forever
I can't rememeber if the XJ's have drainholes stock, I know my ZJ didnt, but its not hard to make your own. (For mud you'll want em)
Expessaly if your using it for mud only, building it should be cheap
Cons:
After owning a ZJ, YJ, and CJ2A, I'd have to say having a softop is a reaon in itself to buy one if you do a lot of trails
If you roll it you might as well turn it into a trail rig, chances are its not roadworthy anymore (First hand experiance in my ZJ)
You don't know it yet, but your about to spend every cent you have to spare on your Jeep.
If you sink it get ready to rip out all of the carpet because its gonna rot expessaly if you don't have drainholes.

Again theres ton more...but....I'm lazy.

i love mine in the mud, never any real problems. good thing to point out is watch out for the alternator in the mud. mud is screwy with them. also it would be a good idea to add a snorkel. besides that, enjoy the fun
