Stock 72' Toy. Alternator is overcharging. Replaced the voltage regulator with one from CarQuest. This one is slightly differant than stock. Where the stock on had two posts and tab for ground the new on has 3 male tabs in connector and ground wire. Found out with the ground connected it blows the gen/turn signal fuse. The new one still overcharges. Any ideas???

Yes I think it’s the wrong regulator I would buy the OME regulator it sounds like regulator is sending voltage down the wrong line and it might have killed the alternator to

Well I cut the extra ground wire and it is working fine now. It charges around 10 volts now that the battery is charged up. I wired the striped wires to match the solid ones on the new regulator.

Mike -- A QUICK CHECK of the voltage:
Engine off. Battery around 12.6V
Run Engine. High Idle speed 13.6V
Turn lights, load on, running... 13.2V
Numbers vary with temperature, but should give you an idea. If the system is charging at "10V" something is wrong. I had a cheap VOM (volt ohm meter) that lied to me... tossed it into the trash can, and bought a good FLUKE for $80. Makes life easier is you have the correct voltage reading.
Alternators are pretty simple little critters. Basically the field "F" winding is either ON or OFF. Off... no alternater output. On... alternator is fully on, but the regulator watches the voltage at the battery, turning the "Field Winding" off when the battery gets above the trip point. Lots of variations, but the basics remain the same.
