Anybody know of a " HEAVY DUTY " 5 ! speed transmission that could be adapted to a cj with the 258 ?

NV4500 is probably the only one. Better start saving now, they're not cheap.

I second the NV4500 and the part about them not being cheap...

I run a NV4500 in my cherokee but I would really love to see somebody adapt one of the new NV5600 six speeds in their jeep...that would be sweet :smokin:

You'll be doin some serious work to get the 6 speed in there.

NV4500--195 lbs dry
NV5600--369 lbs dry
NV4500--18.375" long with bellhousing
NV5600--31.36" with integrated bellhousing

Good luck with that.

Never said it would be easy or possible...just thought it would be cool to have a six speed in a jeep...If you had a stretched wheelbase I think it would be feasable though...

Check my build page...link in my sig. Not with a six, but a lot of the other tech applies.

Good luck with that.

With that thing, you could eliminate the need for a rear driveline

It wasn't easy fitting it in, believe me, esp with the STaK t-case. My rear DS is exactly at 23 degrees.

Im not trying to be an ass, but why waste your money on a nv4500 just to put it behind a 258, there is no point

If you had a big V-8, 360 AMC, or even a sbc 350 then I could see the need for the hd tranny

Here is an idea for u

If you plan on keeping the 258, buy a nv3550 (medium duty) tranny from a 2000-2004 Jeep Wrangler or Cherokee, It is a direct bolt on

the nv3550's bellhousing will bolt right up no adapter needed, and also the dana 300 will bolt right to the back of the nv3550.

I will recommend a clocking ring for it

bye the way I have that setup in my CJ except I have a 304 V-8 behind the nv3550

here is some specs on the nv3550 5 speed overdrive

it's length is 16.75 inches, which makes it smaller than the nv4500
it's dry weight is 100 lbs, which makes it lighter
it's rated at 300ft/lbs of torque, so it can withstand a little punishment from a V-8

and here is the gearing

1st-4.01
2nd-2.33
3rd-1.39
4th-1.00
5th-.78
reverse-3.57

The same reasons you might put a T-18, NP435, or SM420 behind a 258

1) heavy duty for hard use in the rocks with big tires and torque multiplication
2) 6.7 to 1 first gear

yeah if I was going to beat the hell out of my Jeep in the rocks that is exactly what I would do, put in a t-18, np-435, or sm420

I would not spend $2000 dollars on a nv4500 transmission, just to beat it in the rocks, when I could spend a quarter of that on a HD 4 speed

We should also probally find out what gears he is running or planning on running along with tire size. If he has 4.10's he might be able to run 33's and get it into overdrive on the road, but with any size tire above that his overdrive will be null and void, unless he wants to run 4.56's or 4.88's

Just my 2 cents

With 5.38's and 37's, the 5th works real well at freeway speed with the V8. I'm not saying it's for everybody, but for a multi purpose rig that gets run hard in the rocks and then is expected to drive home, I like it.

After all the thread was asking about a heavy duty 5 speed.

Oh I understand that totally, about the HD tranny

I have 4.88's and 35's with my nv3550

I do think he needed to give more info on his rig tho

I am not arguing the fact that the nv4500 is big, nice and tough, If I had the money to throw around I would definately throw one in a CJ, but I would not run a nv4500 with a 258

my opinion

Plenty of folks have blown both ax-15's and nv3550's behind heep 6 cylinders, so why not upgrade to a HD tranny? There is adequate, and then there is bullet proof. If you play off road, bulletproof is better. Besides, lets see you get as low a crawl range with the 3550 as the 4500. If I were looking for a manual tranny, the 4500 would be my only choice, 6 cyl or 8. Only thing I would swap a 3550 into would be a 4 banger due to needing close gear ratios.

(Besides, lets see you get as low a crawl range with the 3550 as the 4500.)

well I guess I would put a 4-1 kit in my Dana 300

what ever you think man, I have one behind my built 304 and my buddy has one behind his built 360, the nv3550 is a solid tranny

Just a little info on the tranny, the nv3500 that was run in dodges and GM's behind V-8's are the exact tranny that New Venture built for the TJ's and XJ's, exact to the tee, except they were called nv3550's

I am not arguing the fact the nv4500 is a strong tranny, and I am not arguing the fact that the nv4500 is an HD tranny and a nv3550 is a medium duty tranny, I really and truely just feel that it is overkill for a 258

I have less than $1000 in my swap, reason being I dont have to have all those crazy overpriced adapters to mate the nv4500 to the AMC engine, and then to mate whatever transfer case you decide to run

start adding the price of a nv4500, all the adapters, drive shaft cut downs and lengthening, or even better new driveshafts, custom skid plates and all the rest of the little stuff you didnt think of in the begining, your total swap will cost you atleast $3500, if not more
