I took out the distributor on my 304 with plans of installing a replacement, but the parts store had the wrong one. I put the distrubutor back on with the rotor in the same position as it was in before, but now it doesn't start. I checked compression out of the #1 cylinder and its TDC matched up with the rotor's position on the distributor. The plugs are getting spark, but it still won't start. Any advice would be appreciated.

You didnt mention the balancer marks so possible youre 180 off and on the exhause stroke? with 1 at tdc the balancer mark should be at zero and the rotor pointing at plug 1.

Is the balancer mark the piece on the block that has the 3 marks with arrows that point down at the harmonic balancer and read 10,5,TDC? I didn't see where they should line up with a point on the balancer.

yes there is a groove that goes across the balancer that will need to line up with the gauge on the block, may be full of dirt or paint or 180 degrees on other side ;)

edit: snapped a quick pic
