I just replaced the original instrument cluster with VDO gauges.

The speedo and tach are 3.125 dia. The fuel gauge is 2.125 dia.
The tach and fuel gauge are working great, but the speedo run into some problem.

The speedo is electronic and programmable, good when tire dia. and gearing are altered. I can always reprogram it.

The problem is in the sender unit. It will not screw-on the transfer case of my 71 FJ40 due to parking brake cable is in the way. The sender unit is bigger than the factory cable connector. I remove the rear drive shaft and took the parking brakes apart thinking I could manage to install it. No way.

The solution is buy an adapter that screws on to the transfer case and plugs to the sender unit. This is a $40 fix, I hope.

The speedo $112, sender unit $65, adapter $40, tach $60, and instrument panel is home made @ $30 (1/8 thk alum, hole saw, and paint).

Email me if you plan to build something similar. :emb: :emb:

Finally, the speedo, tach and fuel gauge are all working.

Love that programmable speedo. I could switch tires with different diameters and with a push of a button, I will have the right speed indicator.

I just wish I found some used parts and it will have been a lot cheaper.
