Whats involved in building a custom steel gas tank for the bed of my wrangler? I want it to fit under neath my tuffy storage drawer in the back. It has six inch lifter brakets and according to my calculations if I build it about 6 x 36 x 36 it should be abouyt 28 gallons. I know that I can get the sumps from jegs but I am not sure what to do about the fill plug because it will be underneath the tool box but I would really like to have it come out right behind the driver side door. Let me know if this is a good idea or if I should have it done by someone else. I will be having a machine shop do the actual welding. If you know somewhere that could do this for a reasonable price let me know.
Thanx

If you are really bored, why don't you start pulling your tires off your wheels, so i can have them already, sheesh!!
seeing as i now have to be driving the cruiser regularly, i wanna be able to go more than 40 mph...
P.S. why are you still on here wasting your time, go outside and press in a pilot bushing, or maybe bolt a pressure plate to a flywheel, or maybe bolt a slave cylinder to a bellhousing, just some random thoughts...
Later Hater!

I made a custom fuel cell for my rig out of 3/8" plate and using parts of the stock tank. I hacked the stocker up and used the internal baffle, pump, filler, vent return, etc... so everything was smog legal. It was bent and sheared to the sizes I needed by a friend, then my bro welded it up. So far it works great and gives me about 28 gallons. The filler was located by premounting the tank, and just cutting a piece of fuel grade filler hose ($$$$$) to length.

can be done, pretty easily.
Weld the top on LAST so you can get good inside welds on most of the seams.
Weld the top on, then line the whole shooting match w/ POR 15 liner.

are you sure that 3/8 is necessary? and do I need anything other than a filler neck and a sump from jegs to run AN lines? will those lines work well offroad? Does anyone know of a shop that does this kind of work?

This, along with the post about scavenging the pick-up port and filler from the original tank, is pretty much what I had in mind. Only thing I’ve got to add is that I wanted to make the top a “bolt on” using button head screws. That way you can weld/seal the inside easily, and bolt the top on with a gasket. If you ever need inside again, (new baffle design, tank in a tank, sprung a leak, need to beat out a dent, etc.) no problem. I’ve seen fuel cells made like this. Only problem is I think that to do a good job on the seal area would require equipment that I don’t have. Rough idea is to build a box frame out of 1"x1/8"angle iron, and weld some sheet (roughly 1/16” or so) inside the frame. That gives you a strong tank and some decent metal to weld the plate onto. Only thing I can come up with for the top (within my means) is welding using the top section of the angle for the lip and making the top out of 1/16 plate (roughly) with a frame of 1/8 strap stock. Probably be ok if I had access to a surface grinder but would be much better with the frame wire cut (or similar) from 1/8” plate. Welding up a seal area that actually seals without resorting to some RTV type stuff could be tough.
Looking forward to more input on this... Good luck!

what are you talking about man? I understyood what you were saying for a little while but I totally lost you in the middle. Bottom line, does anybody know what you need to build one of the tanks or is there anyone out there that does this that I could call?
