What is everyone running for a converter? I need a lower stall/lock up converter to make my junk work better. Has anyone found one that works better than the stock POS for crawling around in the rocks? A part # and specs would be appreciated.....thank you for your support:rasta:

Umm..Stock Chevy Clutch:flipoff2:

Autos:rolleyes: tmtgw=Too much to go wrong...

The only person who has a different converter on their Auto is Rockhog on his Commando. He is just using an RV unit. This is for his 500 Caddy/ Turbo 400 running gear.

John over at Gryphin Racing uses a Caddy engine inhis tow rig, might have some iseas for you. There would be a need for a low stall converter if there was one.

Most off the shelf RV ones are 1100 to 1300. Were are you now?

My stock converter was a LOW stall unit.. how much lower do you want? :D

I changed it out for a higher stall unit...

As far as I know it is a stock replacement that was thrown in with the rebuild, I think it may just be a cheap piece of shit. I'm planning on going with the terra 3:15 kit, so I figure while I'm pulling things apart why not put in a converter that will work a bit better? Anybody run an aftermarket converter like a B & M? My rig works really well as it is, I'm just gettin greedy and want a little more:D

TCI Streetfighter.

Good for the weekend bracket racer who also drives on the street.

Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth: 1972-80, 727 Torqueflite, non-lockup, 24 spline, TCI 10 in. Street Fighter converter

The TCI Street Fighter converter is completely remanufactured with furnace brazed fins, needle bearings, a flame-hardened hub, and will give you about a 3,000-3,500 rpm stall speed. We suggest you use it on a high compression street/strip engine or on high compression and higher performance cars.

Summit lists it for $395.95

But then.. my application is a bit different than yours, Kevin.. but you DID ask! :flipoff2:

Stock replacment is 1600-1800. I'm a big fan of TCI

High Torque Towing Torque Converters

Our gas-efficient High Torque Towing Converter is designed to reduce the slippage found in all non lock-up torque converters. This series of torque converters enables transmissions to run cooler and reduces engine RPM at highway speeds. In addition to the resulting fuel mileage increases, the High Torque Towing Converter also lowers transmission temperature by as much as 20 °F. This is an excellent choice for motor homes, tow vehicles and other heavy load applications.

Is that what you are running? if so how do ya like it? My converter was hittin just under 3k before it would start to pull hard climbing some big azz rocks down south......think this TCI unit will help me out?

as soon as I smoke the one I have now, I'm going to a TCI. How is your idle? When you get the stall real low it can fight you if your engine won't idle at 800-900.

Scoutillac

No problem on the idle, I'm running a conservative cam and can get it down to 600 or so in gear. I may just have to order one of these sometime soon.....thanks a bunch:beer:

Why would you go with an automatic for crawlin'? :flipoff2:

The high-stall converter went in the WFO race truck... the wide T19 is in my trail rig. :)

Just that Scoutillac asked if any of us had used an aftermarket converter.. he didn't say what kind. :D

You might want to contact a place that does custom converters. www.protorque.com I believe that Art Carr in Ca also makes or markets one off custom units.

Don't be coming down on the slush boxes now:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

...sure you can't take them through knee deep water, and they get hot and puke ATF all over, and you can't start them in gear...but they make a shitty driver like me look like a champ. :D

Besides who needs gears??? when you have the magic torque mulitplication... I hear it is like 5 or 6x

Yeah, MINE has 5 or 6x torque multiplication... when it stalls around 2500rpm. :D

Breather tube baby, breather tube. Don't have to worry about water in the tranny ever again. And when they puke fluid, it just goes up into the breather tube loops, doesn't dump out onto the ground. :) Then, just straighten the tube back out, pointing up in the air, and it dumps it back into the pan. Built in extra capacity reservoir...:D

Starting in gear, no problem. Just bypass the neutral safety switch.

And, if you get an SSII Torque Converter, they have a 10x multiplication factor.

and don't forget the open hood to cool it down.... or getting stuck on an obstical because the fluid sloshed back in the pan......

How many trannie you gone through pat????

The only thing that's getting multiplied around here is the amount of bullshit you automatic guys are trying to pass on us. :flipoff2:

Hoop, would it really kill you to throw a t-19 in your SSII? I mean, come awn, how many times do you want to pull that 727 apart, anyway?

Only thing of mine with an automatic transmission in it is my parts shed, and I'm trading it for a 4spd next month. :flipoff2: :D

I'm counting on Patty to do a TF 727 rebuild class at Roundup this year.

I plan on bringing my core for a fire side rebuild ;)

I'm really not as anti-slushbox as I used to be.

My Travelall runs an auto - and since I paid $200 for the whole rig, I didn't complain much.

I got kinda used to it.. it's nice to just drive around town.

I've been driving my Travelette to work - HEAVY CLUTCH. After a week of driving it just to and from (my 10 minute commute) work, my left knee is sore. :)

My trail rig runs a clutch - I like it. Of course, a day of pounding against the snow after a week of driving the pickup.. yeah, my knee wasn't feeling any better, but it's not bad or anything.

I did take the T'all wheelin', and the slushbox requires a different driving style - but I got it down.

The racer runs an auto. The ONLY way to go in that application.

Of course, it's a ratchet-shifted manual valvebody. :D

My "new" 150 pickup is also an auto.. probably keep it, just because I'm too lazy to change it out, and having one nice auto "driver" rig isn't too bad. I don't spill my coffee as often that way. :)

Doh!!! That hurts!!!

OK. Last two times out, I was on the steep stuff and the tranny sucked air and gave out on me. <sigh>

I am lengthening my breather tube, adding several loops and a bottle for reservoir, and overfilling by a quart. See if that helps.

Opening the hood doesn't help the tranny cool down.

Umm, 3, or is it 4 trannies??? Those speed bumps at the mall really play heck with autos!!!

Nope. If someone gave me a t-19 wide, I would put it in, next time my tranny died. But the auto is sooooo graceful on the trail.... And, I would need the deeper gears to run a stick, so.... :)

Pulling the 727 apart is not hte problem. Pulling it out, is. :D

More like a tear down class. Then you get to put it back together yourself :) Be kind of fun to do. Bet we could take one apart in half an hour, maybe an hour.

Don't look at me for valve bodies though. Won't touch em. I take em to the shop for that nonsense.

I'm so lazy, I need to drop my pan and take a look at my valve body, but just have not gotten around to it. I think my valve body has a loose screw or something. Something in it definitely is not right, and it definitely is valve body related.

But, it works just fine in 4lo....... :D as long as it is not standing on its end.

There is a lot to be said for the grace of an auto on the trail

Push up against obstacle. Not climbing? OK, more gas. Still not climbing? OK more gas... and up you go. <g> No slipping the clutch, no taking a run at it, no bouncing. My auto will spin all four tires on the trails around here. Now, if I can cure my axle wrap induced hop, I will be happy. But, parts are being purchased even as we speak to solve that problem....... :D

Grace? Did you see me going on the "slow obstacle course" at all? :D

Grace must be creeping up to the log.. hmm.. not going.. more gas.. hmm.. not going.. MAT IT.. JUMP over the log, then try to slow down again and idle through to the next obstacle. :D

And.. with a wide T19, you wouldn't need to lower your gears to run the 35s you want, Pat.

Just use the creeper gear. That's what it's for. :)

I was over at Rusty's last week to borrow his t-19 wide, but evidently he knew I might be visiting and parked his rig at the shop. :(

A few years ago I got the biggest ration of sh*t for trading my BW auto for a 727 auto. Just put in a 4 speed they all said....
5 years later they all ask me for part numbers to change thier 4 speed for a auto.
That's just too funny.
I think I may dump the auto and put in a 4 speed just to go against the grain.:)

Autos are ESPECIALLY nice if you have a Klune V to put behind them. ;)

The tranny has almost no work to do this way. Almost no overheating problems, etc.
