Ever wonder what AMC 8983 0000 0000 is?
New Chrysler number is Mopar part # 4874464.
Shell MTX Fluid :D or Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid :D (available at Autozone) meet Mopar part # 4874464
Neither Mobil or Valvoline make a oil to the Chrysler a.k.a. AMC spec.
The CJ manual says "top off" with 75w-90 because EP lub is close chemistry to gear oil. ATF (Mercon or Dexron) is in no way similar. The EP lub is closest to lower unit marine oil which is why the manual says top off with normal gear lub. For those familar with marine, the lubricant is a Extreme Pressure and has that light color. This low viscocity factor explains why good success has be found with ATF.
As I've learned from everyone the debate on ATF will continue ... many have used to with successes. The World Class T5 in recent 15yrs of Firebirds and Mustangs all use ATF.
 Anyway I am a little green in knowledge with a new old CJ and was wondering about the EP lub called out by the manual for a oil change. I searched and searched with no successes. I went to the dealer then called the oil companies. So now it it here for the world to see.
