JUst wonderin on a J shift the stick seems to rotate clockwise and counter clockwise instead of being able to hold it solid and punch into gear. Anyone know whats up with this?

Heh, yeah this is a guys stock bronco that we were doing some work on. I am not familiar with it, and wanna know if its something simple or if I needed to pull the case (most likely). Hes probly not even gonna use it anyways :shaking:

Well, you can check to make sure all the linkage is in good order, but these aren't reknown for being smooth shifters in the first place. You could just put twin shifters on it which will allow smooth shifting without actually getting into the case as you would when you "really" twinsticked something. Easy enough to fab your own for cheap or but the kits from just about anywhere for about a hundred bones.

How could you do twin stick? Theirs no linkage like on my 205, but rather the stick goes into the tcase like a 435 with that little dome shaped piece.

They sell both the t-pattern and j-pattern twinstick kits. Check out duff or wild horses.

Actually, the j shifter mounts to the outside of the transfer case and operates external shift rails like a 205. However, it isn't attached to the shift rails, but it just rides in them.

They are pretty easy to do a twin stick conversion on. Just have to modify the shift rails a little bit. If you want to keep it original, rebuilt J shifters are available or you can rebuild it yourself.

Nice pic, that should help illustrate it for him. Yea, he threw me when he was describing it looking like an np-435 setup...

Ohh ok. Well from the top it looked like the 435 as seen in the pic. I got under it and I didnt see any shift rails, but its obvious I didnt look hard enuff. Thanks, I am sure I can figure something out with that.

Yea, alot of guys hack an access port into the side of their trans/x-case tunnel on the drivers side which makes it easier to see all that. In fact, the duff twinstick kit comes with a plate to do just that. None of it isn't stuff you can't fab yourself pretty easily though.

These are the best deal going on twin sticks for the D20 nowadays.

For the J-shift it's silly easy to put them in. Pull the old shifter (2 bolts), cut the flags so they can move independently, bolt in new sticks, done.

There are several very detailed writeups on this mod over on www.ClassicBroncos.com

You can also rebuild the factory shifter to eliminate the turning you are describing. Remove the shifter from the tranny, remove the rubber boot. Then the cap on the ball and socket can be unscrewed and the shifter will pull up and out of the socket. Their is a pin in the shifter ball that is supposed to keep it from rotating. Punch out the pin and replace it with a new pin. Or make your own pin from a drill bit of the same diameter. Grind the flutes off the drill bit leaving the solid round blank of the back half of the bit. Press it in, grind it to length and reassemble with some good lube and your good as new!

Good, cheap tech for somebody that doesn't want to twinstick:beer:
