I like 'em too, but don't have that kind of collection. Here's what I want next:
http://www.ontarioknife.com/images/asek/images/ASEK-w-NSN-a.jpg
The ASEK™ Survival Knife System designed and manufactured by The Ontario Knife Company is the one and only Survival/Egress knife chosen by the Untied States Army to be included in its Air Warrior Equipment System. Don’t be fooled by imitations - This is the only ASEK™ Survival Knife Systems tested and approved by PM Soldier and Natick Research Labs to meet the criteria defined by the US Army. This system is a Survival/Egress Knife with Plexiglas Breaker, Hammer, Saw teeth, serrations, spear holes, lanyard hole and insulated guard. It comes with an anodized aluminum strap cutter to cut webbings, cord, cloth, etc. It has a screwdriver and a honing rod to keep your knife field sharp. The fire retardant scabbard fits on the pilot’s vests, load bearing equipment, web belt, belt or can be worn on the calf as designed for Air Warrior. The strap cutter fits in the left leg pocket on flight suits and is a must for medical crews. Each part of the system can be ordered individually.

I started collecting them when I was very young, and had a really great collection. Probably in the vicinity of 150 knives of all kinds ( a few nice ones, but mostly novelty items that my dad/grandpa/brother gave to me) Seems like for about 10 years I got a new buck for every occasion. HOwever... my parents paid my brother to clean out the garage when I was in my mid-teens, and he did a great job... except that he was completely lit when he did it and threw away all unmarked boxes - about 90% of my knife collection was taken to the city dump :( I didn't feel so bad though, as he also threw away what my mom estimated to be 15-20K in christmas decorations (snow globes, music boxes, antiques, a "nast" or "naste" santa painting that was one of 100 made, etc...)
They could have packed them better, I guess, and at least labeled them :D
Several years later, my dad got a signed un-cut set of Nolan Ryan Coca-Cola baseball cards, coke gave them as a prize of some kind to 500 people. Came with an appraisal and certificate - 5k. My dad left it on the floor in his den and their weiner dog pissed on it. :O
back on topic - I now probably have 20-30 knives that are my collection, only a few that I really care about... my buckmaster, which my dad gave me as a bribe to stop fighting at school (it worked), and a gold knife (hand made, not the best looking but it's actually made of gold) that my grandpa got from his grandpa, from winning a logging contest in Alabama? in the 1800's. The rest are just fluff.
One of the knives that was thrown away, that I have since been unable to locate, is a tiny knife that my brother got from a vending machine in the early 70's. It is MAYBE 1.5 times the size of a dime/penny when opened. it's so small that you could easily break the blade off opening it too roughly, but it was a real folding knife. If anyone has one pm me :D

Holy crap that's a lot of spydercos!
I have had a few Delica II's that were lost while clearing brush. The screws vibrate loose while weedeating or the clip gets caught on the harness and pull the knife loose. Either way, I've lost two that way. :(
I have a Spyderco Cara Cara(cheap version of a spyderco, like a Delica I). It was about 25 on ebay, shipped, and has been a great knife. I like the extra weight over the Delica II, and have found more uses for it in my brush cleanup business, having a longer blade. But the screws on the belt clip have vibrated loose once again, even with red locktite to hold them on. So, provided I can ever get spyderco on the phone  so I can get new screws and a pocket clip, I'm gonna take a tig torch and tack that joker in place. :D
Bobzooki, ya mind stoppin by at Spyderco headquarters and tellin' them to answer the freakin' phone? :D

Wow, you're right (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damascus_steel)
About what? That Damascus Steel simply means folded steels with differing carbon levels, and described the TECHNIQUE, not the STEEL?
Damasuc steel is a technique, and usually used as a selling point...like Soligen steel. There is no such thing...it's simple steel that was forged in a town in Germany.
Now, there is hi-carbon steel, stainless steel, chrome/vanadium steel, etc...but there is no such thing as Damascus steel.

So what is a good fixed blade knife similar to a SOG K-Bar or the knife in Spawn's post between 100 and 150?
Spawn posted an "UZI" branded knife.. basicaly a cheap knife w/cheap steel.
(No offense to Spawn, I have cheap knifes and they have their place... it looks like his is for protection, and the thickness and size of that knife I don't think he has to wrory about it breaking off inside someone.)
For 100 to 150 you should be able to get a good fixed blade knife with good steel.
The BENCHMADE 140 Nimravus with M2 Steel I have is a nice knife the factory sheath is jenky and I don't like it but I like the grip of the knife and size.
What really needs to be asked is WHAT IS YOUR USAGE? The Sog X-42 is a stabber/poker primary usage was for checking contents of bags, barrels and other containers.
The Ontario Rat-7 I have is an AWESOME knife but it's pretty damn big for EDC, great for camping though... but again it's more of a chopper than a utility knife..

You're statement is 100% accurate IMO. I had a Lansky sharpener that would take the blade to damn near a razor edge. It would stay sharp for 6 months before I'd have to sharpen it again. Anyone here ever use one of these sharpeners???

The handmade Ang Khola khukuri. (We were splitting some kindling with it when this was taken.)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/qwiksilver/Misc%20Not%20Jeep/anhkholakukhri.jpg
(from the site)
The Ang Khola has a characteristic forged depression that helps to distribute the weight forward on the blade, making the Ang Khola a powerful chopper. Ang Khola means “back-valley” or "back-hollow", referring to the depression near the spine ('back') of the blade.
15 inch, 3/8+ in. thick, about 1.5lbs, horn handle, comes with a cardi (small eating knife) and a chakma (for burnishing the blade) and a water buffalo hide scabbard.
If you want to see how these things are made go to the website. These are some pretty primative conditions and some gorgeous working blades come out of those conditions. When you hear that these beautiful and strong blades come from old leaf springs, I know you metal workers will be interested to see how. (I haven't looked at a set of broken leaf springs as junk since.)

would anyone in this thread know where I could get a knife authenticated? A while ago I had bought a box of army surplus stuff at a flea market. After going through the box at home I came across a Nazi boot knife. It looks authentic. the blade has a puma mark at the base. I have tried doing some research on it and it appears to be a "Hitler Youth Knife" I tried doing research before but anytime you try to do anything with "hitler" and "nazi" in it you get into all of these website that really don't help me in trying to see if this is real or a reproduction.

I think you found some guys that won't need an elaborate bug out bag. ;)
That is a very nice knife, very impressive how they make them. I'm working on making a few blades myself. One is from an old jeep leaf spring, the other is from an old weedeater blade. The spring one is like the knife used in the movie, "The Hunted".(Google for Tom Brown and knife for a pic ;) ) The second is a little hard to describe. I'll have to get some pics up sometime.
If I can get these to work out, I'll have to try making a kukri next. :D

The beauty of using old leaf springs your buddies break out at the Hammers is that they are already pounded down. You just have to pound them a little more to get the molecules to line up a bit more. And how many people will just dump their broken springs on you? Free pre-worked steel!
My kuk was inexpensive...$125.00. That is low for a good blade.
I have hammered pegs with mine (there went the finish) and split wood with it. I trimmed some meat using the crook of the blade (where it is sharpest) and opened coconuts with the head section. The Kuk is a nice all round blade.
If they still have them up, read the Knife Magazine reviews. Pretty impressive.
And the water buffalo grip is polished to the point of looking manmade. The scabbard is heavy water buffalo hide.

If anyone has one pm me :D
you can buy them at the dollars store genius. I used to have like 3 of them cuz they are handy

Cool, sounds like an all around good knife. I didn't like some of the pics of the handle one fellow was making. I'd prefer a full tang... but it also noted thats not how they make the ones for export. ;)
I'm probably going to make one, it might be winter before I have time though. :( I'd like to know how they put that curve into the blade?

Yay sharp things! Here's my small collection. All but 2 I got from my grandfather, who was a WWII vet and collected all kinds of military goodies over the years.
Top to bottom:
15 1/2" bayonet, I have no idea on origin, if anyone recognises it as something I'd appreciate knowing what it is, originally the steel and scabbard were raw, and the wood was a much lighter color, I painted it to stop it from rusting any farther.
WildCat X8 8", was my main working knife till I got the big one
6" bayonet, I know this one's US and probably Vietnam to present vintage, don't know what gun it's for (again would like to know if anyone recognises it)
Then my Swiss Army, can't remember which model, but it's the biggest one they made at the time, 32 tools
The wee one at the bottom is my little 3" daily carry that I believe came from K-Mart's sporting goods department, a damn good knife for 7 bucks

Honestly, it didn't seem cheap at all. Price went down on them greatly - the one I had was bought for me by the gf and she paid ~100, now I see them much cheaper.
Probably not the highest quality steel, but it held its sharp edge for a LONG time, and I'd bet my left wrist it wouldn't break off too easy.. I lost mine though and going to pick up another one off ebay. For the price, I think you'd be impressed with the performance, I sure as heck was. Oh, did I say it was sharp as fawk and held its edge? :p

My dad was a sniper in the war, and he's generally an all around bad ass:D and he said the only time he was ever nervous was sitting around with a bunch of these little Gurkhas and their big fawking knives:laughing:
Apparently they were awesome at sneaking up and playing "jokes" on their Allied recon buddies:D

On a serious note of those who have bought the commander, any complaints I have yet to hear any and figure this place would tell it. Also price to pay? buy new or used?

My modest little collection.
Don't laugh at the exacto blade. They are fantastic for caping out moose and deer.

I have no complaints about my Commander or any Emerson knife I have owned. I bought mine new on ebay for about $100. Be careful there are cheap knock offs on ebay all the time. New or used you will not be disappointed.

Anyone have recommendations for a good deer/elk gutting knife? I'm tired of using folding/locking blade knives for the job. It's definitely got to be a small-medium fixed blade because I'm tired of the tedious cleaning it takes to really get a folding knife clean after poking around in a chest cavity.
I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of this CRKT CR2850;

I'd kinda like to stay around the $50 range if possible (The one above is around $100). I also considered something with a gut hook for slicing open the skin to get at the stomach but fear that back stroking inside while rolling out the guts it might grab all over.
Are the Gerber blades worth a crap? I see wally-world has this #6904 for $40 (probably junk);

I'd look for something with a small blade and decent sized handle. Seems to give me more blade control but I'm not an expert. Something like this maybe:

Sog also has a couple smaller bladed fixed knives that seem like they would work well.

You're right about the gut hook. I tried one for one deer and decided it wasn't necessary.(and I nicked my nuckle) Lately I've been using my folding Gerber gator and I'm comfortable with it. Cleaning it is no big deal. For the mid to low end knives, I've had no problems with Buck and Gerber. Buck makes a 10 point and 12 point That fits what you're looking for and Benchmade has a rant DPT thats in that price range but the blades a little long for me at about 4 1/2 inches.

I needed a knife for work, and I found this today while out and about.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x263/jason_y/196430000_large.jpg
It's a Smith and Wesson Homeland Security knife. The handle fit my hands like a dream, and it has some heft to it, so it doesn't feel like you're gonna break it that easily. I have the smooth blade.
I picked it up for a little over 10 bucks, so if it dies within a year or so, meh, no big loss.
