I'm kind of at a loss for next step in trying to fix this.
Here is the back ground on the problem:
I have a '87 MJ with a swapped in Chevy small block, I am using the P/S pump from a '86 Monte Carlo. (It's what I had brackets for). I had the same setup in my XJ before but with a steering gear from....well, the ground in the junkyard....no idea what it was, I had thought they where all the same then:rolleyes:
It worked great in the XJ but leaked. When I ditched the XJ I got rid of the gear to, I figured the stock MJ one would be fine.
The problem is that the power assist "skips." It's like one seconed it is there and then it stops helping and then it is back. The pump also sounds over worked and the motor bogs more then I would think it should. It also bogs the motor much worse when I turn left....that fact alone seems really odd to me.
The lines are on right, I confirmed that with the box on my DD and here. They where fee of junk so I don;t think the system is contaminated. It is full of fluid and I have cycled it like nuts hoping it was just air in the system.....doesn't seem like it though:(
Any ideas at all? I am kind of at a loss on this. I don;t want to have to spend a ton on it, I plan to go 1 ton axle in the future and will be doing the hydro steer thing so I don;t want to drop a bunch of money into this setup.
