: Steering Column/Shifter Problems

I have a '93 YJ Automatic Transmission with the stock NP231 and TF999. About six months ago I was stopped on a steep hill climb and threw the shifter into neutral and put my parking brake on. When I started her up again to proceed with the climb, the shifter no longer worked properly. I was wondering if anyone has ever had these same symptoms, what was wrong with it, and how they fixed it:

Gear Shifter doesn't lock in each gear.
It moves freely from Park to 1st.
Doesn't give transmission a pause, shifts immediately.

It's not that big of deal, just gets kind of annoying when driving and the gear shifter slowly slides down. Any help would be appreciated.

Silly question.... Have you taken a gander at the shifter linkage?

Yeah, I have, but everything looks fine. I haven't yet been able to get someone under there while I shift. Anyone have symptoms like this? A simple middle finger will let me know you haven't.

I think there is a problem in the tranny. I think the linkage sounds fine.
