I am looking in to swapping out the 4.3 v6 for a cummins 4bta 4 cyl. diesel into my 82 yota. I will run probobly a 465 to my dual case setup for the trans. I just want some feed back from some guys out there and see If I really want to try this swap.

Thanks

i saw an article in a mag awhile back about a guy that put one of those in a willys wagon. don't think you have the room.you would have to the radiator in the back if you tried it.

i'll try and dig out the article,i save EVERYTHING:D :D :D

If its a driver you'll want an OD trans. The motors are not that hard to come by. They are real heavy and vibrate quite a bit. Try the conversions forum on www.turbodieselregister.com.

found the article:) ,it is in the jan 2000 edition of four wheeler. the co. that did the work is;womack diesel service inc. 1-803-379-0030 in texas,womack@axs4u.net.

they used the 3.9l cummins turbo diesel dynoed at 130hp and 525ft lbs at the rear wheels:D :smokin: .that a good reason to do one. looks like it would be really tight in a yota.

Lemme get this straight. No offense, I like Toyotas and have a great respect for them... but you are going to hook up something with 525 ft. lbs torque to a twin Toyota t-case setup? I don't think even Marlin would recommend that. Just sounds like a bad idea IMO. Heck talking to Advance even the Atlas II is more or less rated to only around 700 ft/lbs, not a huge amount more than the 525 you are talking about and it's internals are huge. I'm guessing the whole doubler Toyota setup weighs about the same as just the Atlas alone, probably even a good chunk less actually. Just something to keep in mind.

I think that one was turned up a littlew. The info I have found said more like 120 hp and 300 lb of torque so...

I need to measure my truck better now that I have Dimensions.

Thanks for the feed back

yeah they said they turned it up a few notches:eek:
105hp and 325ft lbs stock at the rear wheels which is still a ton:D

Might just need more thinking. I think I would sill like to do the swap. If it breaks I will swap in something better, That is if the motor will fit time to go Measure.

i love a diesel in my tow rig but i would not want one in my trail rig. yeah they make torque but i like to play with the horse power of a gas motor. just my op.

is Camo really your daddy?

Yeah, still very impressive numbers, that should be a nice setup. My only other piece of advice is to be sure and get the Toyota turbo t-case input shafts for the t-cases, as I recall (it's been a while since I had one) they are eithe 23 spline or 32, don't remember which but I am sure there are a ton of folks here that will know for sure. That should help preserver those t-cases a bunch!

hey another motor that might work is the perkins diesel 4cyl.
smaller in size if i recall about the same hp and torque.my neighbor and i put one in his kubota track hoe,non turbo version.

kick ass motors but HEAVY muthafawkers.

go for it, but dont be surprised if your rig handles like a 1970s musclecar from all the weight in the front

Well the swap WILL be difficult and might need surgery on the firewall But I think Im going for when I get my tax checks. I need to do more research so I might just change motors, but I want a deisel, preferably a Turbo.

As far as handling, It allready handles like shit so no real big deal. Might end up selling the current drive train to help fund the swap, and do an Atlas, We shall see

And as far as Camo goes I AM NOT HIS KID:-D

Have you checked with Camo to see his opinion? Im sure he would want to assist with his kids project.
Why the big obsession with a diesel? For off roading you can find engines that make just as much torque, more horse power, and quicker throttle response, all with less weight, and less noxiouse smell. I have been on the trail with a few diesels before, it was kinda like sitting in LA traffic smelling the trucks and busses all day long on trail. Sitting in a hot canyon with no wind blowing, and the diesel fumes wallowing up around me all day long makes want to :barf:

Mostly to be different. But uppon further research I dont think it will happen. Just the sheer size of the motor and how small the engine bay is it just wont fit. I just wanted to be a little different, the 4.3 performs nice but I know lots of guys with 4.3s and none with cummins.....

Oh well, Thanks for the feed back guys

Damn that was easy,..maybe I should be some kind of professional drive train counselor or some thing along those lines. It could be very rewarding counseling wayward kids(even Camo's), to choose the propper drivetrain in these mixed up confusing times. :flipoff2:

Have you got a contact for the guy in Wisc. with the engines? I'm actually looking for a baby cummins for an upcoming project.

ya its an old thread but i did some measuring and with a 3" body lift a cummings 4bta will fit into a toyota engine bay and still have some room for a radiator up front but you might have to trim the fender wells and radiator support for some more air flow. Also does any one know if the bell housing adapter from a dodge 5.9 (the one that goes between the block & tranny) will work on a 4bta? Thanks

Yep, they will, but why worry about it???

Use the SAE #3 flywheel housing and clutch cover. You can get them for most T- series trannies, several of the SMs, and I think for most of the NV's

TR

well isnt the SAE #3 bell hosuing bigger than a dodge or chevy adpater? its mainly a clearance issue and a $$$ issue cause it would be cheaper to get the NV4500HD complete with the block to bell adapter from a dodge ram.

I can't compare, since I've not seen the dodge/chevy flywheel housings.

The SAE might be a little bigger.
is length the issue, or what???

TR

mainly yes, with a 3" body lift a chevy bellhousing on a 4bta would clear the tranny tunnel and from what ive seen a sae bell housing is round so it would hit on the bulkhead.
