Hey everyone I took my driveshaft off and I noticed that the pinion has alot of slack in it. It turns about half way but my brother says it moves 3/4 of an inch around before it locks, is that normal or is my rear end going out. do u think its just the ring and pinion going out or bearings ne help would be great thanks kenny

did you try pulling the diff cover off and looking inside? Maybe you could take the ring gear out and take a look at the pinion. Is there a reason you can crawl under the truck and take a look at shit?

Do you have a detroit? If so, it's normal.

If the pinion bearings were shot you would also have some up/down, side/side slop.

what do you mean when you say it goes 3/4 of an inch around before it "lockes up"? are you talking about resistance to the pinion gear turning, or do you mean before both wheels lock up? if your talking the pinion gear turning, then I can't see how having a detroit would effect that at all? you'd most likely need to rebuild the differentail, or at least take it apart and adjust everything.

yeh before both wheel lock up. before the ring locks and both wheels turn

yeah, thats fairly normal. you should also be able to take the rear wheels (when both are off the ground) and spin them, then take one and quikly stop it and spin it the other way (this is checking to see if it will dis-engage).
