We have two big exhaust fans in our shop- I think 4' each. In a storm, wind is blowing the water against the shutters and letting it into the shop. I am looking for a plastic, fiberglass, or metal hood that covers the top of the fan, and projects the exhausted air downward. I'm not sure what to call this, which is why I'm not using google, but posting here. :confused:

That would simply be called an elbow.

Galvanized sheet metal will be good for this.
Track down a sheet metal duct work shop and give them the dimensions, and ask them to make up an elbow for you. Figure in a mounting flange that you can use to mount it to the louver. This way they can include the flange into the design. Bring a detailed drawing of the louver dimensions and the surrounding area with you.
Take into consideration the swing of the louvers to have enough room for them to open up when taking your mesurements.

Thanks, that'd do the job... but I'm wondering if there is something that is already pre-fabbed for this sort of thing? I figure something made custom would be a little expensive. ;)

I don't know how big of a city you're in, but the prefabbed elbow like above were about $60 last time I bought one. We use them for swamp cooler installs all the time. They usually come in 18", 20", and 22" real common.

If you have sheetmetal shop in town, I would think they could make that for $100 or less easy. They may even have some laying around that someone never picked up.

We might just do this with some scrap panelling we have.

I appreciate the other suggestions, but finding a hood large enough to fit(4' fan, I think a 4.5 or 5' opening) seems like its unusually difficult considering how many commercial buildings there are with fans of this size. :confused:

I'm from Senoia, currently live in Griffin, but will be moving this weekend. :rolleyes: I'm familiar with the racetrak... avoid it like the plague on raceweek. ;) Those times, the traffic is as bad as y'all have on the northside of Atlanta(on a regular day).

Ohhhhh OK. Been there once or twice. Could hear them racing on Saturday nights all summer, and they're on the far opposite end of town from home. :laughing: I would go all the time if it were a dirt track. I love a good dirt track. I try to hit Lavonia speedway a few times a year when I'm visiting family around Lake Hartwell.

Shucks. :emb: Forgot to get the measurements again today. We still have to put the gutters up, so I have a feeling they'll interfere. Maybe its best to wait until they're in place. (Kinda hoping the water won't be as bad with the gutters in place too)
