Tell me what you know about them.

Yes I did search but what I am really looking for is:

Are they all offset diff but with the placement of the pinion it ends up centered?

If not which ones have something else? I am looking to go pass offset and I know some people have done this I just don't know how.

How do you convert to 14 bolt stuff? Which 14 bolt do you get the shafts out of?

Should I look for one under a dually or a non dually? What is the difference?

What is a used detroit for one worth?

What parts are needed for a disc conversion?

what gears were factory?

Anything else of interest to me?

Thanks
Ron

All I have seen have the pinion in the same spot. It is centered as the diff is offset and the pinion is too - but it ends up being centered. Stock gear options: 5.14 or 4.57 (Randy's carries 3.90 and 4.10). To convert to 14bolt stuff - you need a narrow 14bolt (came in work trucks, etc.). Then you use the 14 bolt shafts and side gears. I've found used detroits for about $350 although Randy's sells them for like $600  . I am using stock front 3/4 ton 4x4 brakes. You need the calipers, rotors, and then some 3/4 caliper brackets. My local 4x4 shop carries them - or Shaker could probably make you a set. Any more q's???

(your eaton guru :flipoff2:)

p.s. - here are some more stats:
-stronger than a 14 bolt
-1.55" shafts w/ 17 splines
-12.25" R&P
-rated at 11K lbs, but some had the pinion gear "load bolt" and were rated at 17K lbs
-'69 to '72 had a factory Detroit option
-2wd were setup with trailing arms and coils, while the 4wd were leaf sprung over the axle
-eaton's are found in the rear of '62 to '72 GM 3/4 ton trucks

brector, why do you say the cab and chassis shafts? they are exactly the same at the standard 14bolt shafts. the difference in width of the cab and chassis rears is all in the wheel hub. the shafts are the same between the two. anyway what am i missing?

also why run 14bolt shafts in a eaton? if you are going to do that then why not just run a 14 bolt? just curious.

So you can keep your eaton 3rd and use the cheap ass 14 bolt detroit.

I was told there is a 14 bolt that is narrower and I thought it came in cab and chassis rigs. I guess I might be mistaken - but I thought those were narrower 14 bolts.

Brector pretty much summed it up. They are a hughe mutha rear end. /I have one that I'll be putting 3/4 ton chevy discs on shortly. Mine is from a 70 (I think) and it has 4.56 gears with the detroit option. The real model name used by GM is HO72 but it is made by eaton. there was a thread on this a few weeks back in the general 4x4 or jeep and another in the chevy section.

Here is a link to a articel I found on it.

14FF rear disc conversion - same as eaton ho72 rear disc conversion

I did search I was just looking for more info:

This is from a POR member in regards to making it passenger offset:

"take out third member and remove back cover
turn housing around so left is on right right is on left vent still on top
put 3rd back in
viola offset to passenger"

Forgive me but I just don't get it. How does this work out?

Ron

EDIT: NEVER MIND I am a FAWKING IDIOT! grrrrrrrrrr stock it is offset to the drivers side with the pinion on the passenger side ergo when you swap the houing upside down it all goes right.

The general freakishness of this swap appeals to me, as does the removable third member (gotta love doing gear/diff on the bench while the axle hangs under the truck). Sidegear wheel adjusters and extra pinion support bearings.

Lowish pinion, tho.

Anybody ever shaved one of these?

Brian....you claim to be the eaton guru, but you said that the only gear ratios from factory were 4.57 and 5.14 but left out that you could also get one with 4.11's from the factory. Just thought you should know since Galloway's got mine with 4.11's.

yes I am big on freakishness

Also anyone (ie fcfred) know if the shafts can be reused after flipping the housing? I would think so but I want to be sure.

Finally:

Is there any difference between the dually eaton and the non dually eaton? IE which one do I want?

what are the odds of it having a detroit? Is it like hens teeth or say 50/50 or most of them or what. Ballpark estimate would be fine.

Ron

PS you want freakishness? Rover actually used a version of the Eaton called the ENV in their 1 ton trucks in the mid 60s
