ok here the deal i just got this truck.it is a 1500 with a 350 and a th400 i'm unsure of the transfer case it has a driver side front drive shaft and a dana 60 front and a 14 bolt rear.it has 44" on it.not sure what gear it has.the kid that i got the truck off of did not build the truck.the truck takes off good but shifts about 2900 rpms in 1st and 2nd and will not go past that and it will not kick down at all.if i come to a stop it goes back to 1st.what can i do to make it go past 2900 rpms. i have got under the truck and looked at the trans and i did not see any plugs on it. or a manul kick down.thanks for any help

The th400 does not have a kickdown. It has a vacuum that tells the tranny when to shift. On the passenger side there is a hose that comes off of the tranny right by the governer. If you take that hose off there is a small flat head adjustment. To make the tranny take longer to shift turn it clockwise and vise versa for shorter. The hole is very small and if it is like mine the headers are right there so you will need a short flat head screwdriver.

transmission does have a electronic kickdown on the drivers side middle above transmission pan. your problem sounds like vacumn/stuck valve problem. start off checking to make sure you have good vacumn to modulator, if when you pull the vacumn line off and there is fluid in it then modulator needs to be replaced. if you have good vacumn to it make sure that then double check that your transmission vacumn is a manifold source and not coming from carb. if it is coming from carb you are not going to get a consistent vacumn and you need to relocate to a manifold source. if all that is proper then drop the pan and make sure no excessive metal is in the pan/filter , if there is a lot of metal time to rebuild if pan is clean pull the governor out and make sure that the valve is not stuck , if valve is free time to dig into the valvebody. go through these steps and you should find a problem. hope this helps

The T400 has an electric kick down switch.

would not worry about the kickdown switch right now. sounds like you have other things to be worried about:flipoff2:

TH400 has a pan that looks like texas, th350 is square with a corner cut out. 700r4 is square. if it is a TH400 there is NO manual kick down. it is electronic/vacuum.

Kickdown cable goes into the case near the dip stick tube-then attaches to the carb linkage on the other end. It is also adjustable for different throttle settings. Pull on the carb end of it-it should have spring resistance.
